I would have voted for "combination of all" but decided to go with prying just to irritate all those who would stand against Jerry.

You also forgot price.

You also forgot Internet trendy braging rights ( peer pressure) :D

I voted Slicer

Good question!

I picked batoning as my priority, with slicing second. With just this single function, I can build a fire.

In every case, the knife's function is to make smaller pieces from one large piece. But my emphasis is on outdoors use, esp. firebuilding. Split the wood to get to the dry stuff and cut shavings for tinder. I can use a saw instead of chopping and I can pry with other tools...

But I buy Busse's that can do them all.

:D :D

Hmmm. the data seems to reflect that Busse kool-aid drinkers value cutting/slicing pretty highly. Could it be that Busse knives, w/ or w/o factory edge, are actually decent at cutting and slicing while still being pretty good in many other areas? How can this be? ;)

Slicing, batonning, chopping, prying.

In that order.

 Ditto...

Batoning might easily swap with slicing... it depends on the blade.

Actually, on less than 5" blades, the batoning goes to the bottom. Slicing, prying, slicing, then batoning/chopping.

what about stabbing/poking?

slicing
prying/chopping (tie)
batoning

I know their are other qualities of a knife but I was just picking some of the more popular and general uses of a knife.

Well, I'm in Florida, and it's wet all the time here, and I'm wet most of the time. I hate rust. I can always sharpen a knife that dulls fast, and I don't care how it looks. But I hate rust. Put corrosion resistance at the top of my list, and let's hear it for H1 steel.

If it was down to just one knife then I would vote:

Cutting/Slicing ability.
Chopping ability.
Batonning ability.
Prying ability.

Based on the tasks I do when out and about.

But... above all... I rate ergonomics as the most important factor in a knife.

If it's uncomfortable to use... it makes every task a chore.

I want a knife that will help get chicks. That and a mask.

A knife , mask and a Big van. Thats all I need.

:D

Just for everyone here who might not catch it, the sole voter that the single-most important function is as a pry tool is a fake Jerry. For some odd reason, I can smell them (all of the fake Jerrys) a mile away. :D

The only reason I owned a hogsjtacle was as a sharpened prybar. it's most important function was to be the best prybar possible.

Cutting/Slicing
prying
batoning
chopping
BUT if I don't like the loks of the blade I'm not gonna have it in the first place so I rank aesthetics pretty high but I guess that's for another discussion.

Just as the pole is posted. I would have to add comfort/feel, and as stated before the durability of all posted. Without the durability present, something wont get accomplished!!!

Mine are the order that you've listed them in...

Although... in reality, what will be most important to me,
is what ever the situation calls for.
And that's why I like Busse... They can handle them all. ;)

.

I must not have been paying attention for the last two weeks (actually slooooow computer at inlaws). Must have missed the Busse trolling.
Slicing then the rest I am waffling on. (prying is nice because if it can stand up to it, then it it is gonna be tough). But I like chopping (hey, it is fun),

Spyderco is a few doors down the hall. They have a fairly big chopper (for them) coming out made in H1. You might look into it. ;)

I don't see Busse moving into H1 at this time. :D
