Most over rated Spyderco?

I am not trying to pick on any Spyderco knife, I just think discussions like this are interesting and informative.

Which Spyderco do you think is over rated for what it is?

I have to say the Native. I know they are only about $40-50 for the S30V version but I had one and I really didn't like anything about it. People seem to really love this knife but I don't get it. Everything about it just seemed wrong.

Which one do you just not get?

I would have to disagree with you on that one. No offense. With S30V, great ergonomics, great quality and at $40 bucks. I would thinking the exact opposite. I think the knife is very underrated.

Sorry, I meant S30V not 440c. I am not saying the quality was bad because it was good. I just didn't think the design was up to Spyderco's normal standards. It didn't feel like a Spyderco. It felt like it could have been made by anyone.

Another one that was like that was the large gray FRN Wayne Goddard that I had for a little while. When I opened the box and held it, I must have had a sour look on my face. It is often a pleasure to hold a new Spyderco knife, there is always something that sort of makes you smile in the ergonomics. With the Goddard, it was like a cheap knock off of a real Spyderco.

Compare those knives to the Delica 4, Endura, Police, or even a Rescue and you will see how much more ergonomic they are.

Rating the design of a knife is a very personal thing. Tastes vary quite a bit. that's why we offer so many different types of designs; big, small, humps, no humps, slip-joints, MBC.

Agreement on this subject will vary a great deal, IMO, with no real conclusions other than the variety of interest in different design"types".

There are a number of Spyderco's past and present, that I find unattractive, and a number I find not to be ergonomic, at least for my hand. But I don't equate the fact that many others consider one or another of the models I dislike to be their favorite with it being "over-rated". The closest to that, for me, would be the two Bob T's. I can understand them being collectable, but I find it more difficult to understand what folks see in them as "users", than any other model.

I felt the same way about the Native.

Let me get my flame suit on...

OK, I'd say the most overrated Spyderco is the Delica.

Of course, this is my subjective, personal opinion. Tip is too fragile, ergonomics feel like my hands are way too big (and I don't have big hands), etc. There's lots of Spydercos I don't like, but I never cared for the Delica, and it's their #1 all-time best selling knife. Give me a Calypso Jr. over a Delica any day.

I haven't handled a Delica 4 yet though.

But like Sal said, for every Spyderco I don't like, there's one I do like. So many different models, one is bound to find one that suits them.

While they're excellent knives nonetheless, I think the delica/endura is way overrated, well, at least in the excellent company of knives like the centofante and native (and maybe d`allara). In fairness to the delica/endura, haven't tested the 4s.

I would say the Military is the one I'd call overated. I'd like it a lot better as a lock back personally.

it would have to be the only spydie i didnt like the joht singh kalsa. I liked the looks but the 2 i have had would open in your pocket if ya werent carefull (put your hand in your pocket after keys and withdraw and it would hit the horn on the blade initiating opening and cutting ya).

My two favorites are the Wayne Goddard and the native. I carry both, not at the same time, and use the one I'm carrying on a daily basis. Both are outstanding tools.

The rescue is clipped to my jeep visor in case of an accident and a stuck seatbelt.

Which Spyerdo is overrated? I have see some I wouldn't purchase but have not found any overrated.

No flames, just an observation. The Delica and Endura have generally been held in relatively low esteem by the afficianado community. Their appeal has traditionally been to the mainstream buyer just looking for a solid, reliable knife at a somewhat reasonable price. So it's not surprising that a fair number of us do not place either of them on our personal "top ten Sypderco models" list. And add me to the list of those who think the Native is one of Spyderco's best designs.

i have a stainless steel native and i love it . definitely one of the best folders i own and i have 140+ different knives

I think STR really hit the nail directly on the head on this one. It's really not that the Military is over-rated per se but I agree with him that the Military with a compression lock or even a lock back type of lock would be a super premium full sized folder. When it comes to carrying a full sized folder I have much more confidence in the Manix than I do the Military.

Now I have the S30V, combo edged version of the Military in my user's arsenal and it is a keeper for some jobs but I would much rather see it re-vamped with a new lock. There is a thread on the Spyderco.com forum as we speak dealing with that subject matter. If I had to pick another Spyderco knife that I was just plain disappointed with it would have been the Scorpius. It is one of the very few Spydercos I've handled and checked out that just didn't seem right to me

But then again it is like the General says that you have a big "personal preference" factor involved here too. But STR hit that one square on. The MILI needs to be revamped IMHO.

The newest release. Any newest release. Seems people just have to have them in a compulsive sort of way [edit - I DO include myself in this comment ;) ] ........ then they faid as then next newst release comes out. In paticular the Poliwog comes to mind. People were origionally going crazy over it then it kind of dissapeared.

No knock on the knife or Spyderco - just some of the hysteria in the market place that occures. The ZDP Caly had its frenzy but now has calmed down a bit - with the release of more newer ZDP models.

I do however feel that the new Horn will have staying power  - but it seems to be a bit more of a sleeper than I thought it would be.

Just some thoughts - this is quite the land mine rich discussion. Sort of like a can of gas meets match. :)

Great point Turner III. I remember when the Poliwog was about to be released. I had at least 4 good collector friends call me and e-mail me telling me that this was going to a Super Spyder for sure. Since it's release I have had the opportunity to get several of them very reasonably. Not saying that the Poliwog is not a great quality knife ( as most Spydercos are) but I am saying that it's popularity rose and descended like a roman candle.
Now the OCELOT was one that did live up to it's pre-market hype. If I could get one with solid ( non footprint) scales it would be an EDC for me.

A lot of times new Spyders ( or the introduction of any new media hyped knife) can be like the X-mas holiday>> it is rarely what people expect it to be as far as living up to all of their expectations. But I will admit that right now I am like a kid on X-mas eve in wait for the Superhawk.
