Most overpriced knives in the world?!?

I was killing some time by poking around on the net, and I ran across what appears to me to be the most overpriced knives I have ever seen. Honestly, what am I missing here?

http://www.bladerigger.com/home.html

There are lots of very interesting looking designs that I really like, otherwise I would not even bother to comment and ask what I am not understanding.

Hi Mike,
Bladerigger has a forum on this site, the above question has been discussed in detail.
I have never seen any of JSP's products but those who have all have sighted the quality and design features. They are well regarded by Greg Lightfoot, who knows a little about tactical knives and IIRC by Normark who has a little experience in sheath and carry designs, as well as industrial art and the precision required. You can often tell the quality of a product by those who choose to use them, and not as an endorsement.
My brother was over yesterday so that our kids could play, etc. I was cutting up some sausage and peppers using my Sebenza and a Rinaldi TTKK in Talonite. When my brother found out how much they cost he did not believe me. He carries a spyderco folder I gave him and has a cold steel SRK (again that I gave him) he pointed out that his knives cost far less than mine and worked as well. In life there are times where the return (as a percentage) on money spent greatly diminishes, but for those who care and obsess it is money well spent.
Take care and be safe,
Chad

Dang, I did not realize bladerigger had a forum here! I looked right past it, several times, while perusing that section.

Of course if I had known they had a forum I would have read a bit before posting what is a opinion/question.

Thanks for the heads up chad234.

I must say though, even after reading through the JSP forum, I'm still not seeing the appeal, but this might be more a reflection on me than on the value/prices :(

Looks like those BLADERIGGERS are giving PHIL HARTSFIELD some competition...both are way, way overpriced, in my opinion.

Hey Guys...

Chad,, Thanks for the mention...

Mike,,,

As far as overpricing goes...
Well maybe BR's gear is overpriced,,maybe it's not,, it definately a matter of opinion...

I own a Bladerigger Executive shoulder rig, and although there are a few things that bother me about the rig, things "I" would do differently, things I would do to it that would increase the value of it's use 200%,, it is still a Very high quality rig that is well made, fairly well thought out and perhaps to whowever needs it,worth every penny..

It has alot of features, such as quality and class, that will be on my future rigs, but is also missing some...I use my Executive alot both as EDC and when out in the bush carrying large fixed blades..However I have more hours logged with it on outside of my clothing.

Would I use James's rigs on my sheaths??
You betcha I would, have and do on a regular basis.

When you boil it right down, James spends alot of time on creative thought. Workmanship at least on the Executive rigs I've worked with is first rate, and I believe he works hard to give his clients a good product for their hard earned dollar..

It's definately a matter of taste...Some people find my work too frigging expensive...:) Hmmm maybe I should drop my prices..:)

Agree completely. But different strokes for different folks. JSP has quite a dedicated fan base here.

Hold on a minute...There, I have my Nomex flame-retardent flame-suit on...:D.:D.

Most overpriced knives in the world?!?
...the CR Sebenza..:p..

I gave up on the overprice thing many years ago. In real terms they couldn't possibly be overpriced or they wouldn't have any customers. That doesn't mean they are not overpriced for you and me. I remember when I use to think that anyone spending over $100 on a knife was just another Yuppy fool getting conned. I guess I have developed into quite a fool since then.

It can't be any worse than all of the folks who pay three times as much for a Chevy just becuase it wears a Cadillac plate, and it is definitely better than some of the "art" that turns up on canvas with astronomical price tags.

Explain why. I had a very hard time getting a better made frame lock today, so if you know of a better deal please let me know about it.

YOU REALIZE THIS MEANS WAR!! (said in my best Bugs Bunny Immitation - which isn't very good)

I found the Sebenza to be very reasonable - especially when you put it side by side with some of the custom framelocks. I know, I know, granted it sure isn't "custom", but it is close enough for my pocket.

Geez Dann, I'm not going be standing near you any time in the near future. A guy could get burned to a cinder standing to close.

HAHAHAHAHAHA...I KNEW that my comment about the 'Benz would wake-up a few of you bastids.:D.:D.

stjames,
Check-out the Camillus EDC. Sure, it's NOT in the same "class" as a 'Benz, but the price of the "EDC" is about 1/5th that of a "typical" Sebenza.

Maybe i'm not quite on the same wavelength as you guys, but compared to some of the custom folders you get round the places, the Sebenza is cheap.

I know that the custom pieces are unique, one of a kind, special etc. but they dont do much more than your average good quality folder, and certainly not enough to be 4 times more expensive. I've seen folders round the place for over $2000, and they wouldnt do much better than my spydie!

Call me a philistine, but thats the way I see it.

I'm not impressed with any of the cheaper steel handled frame locks to come out, though the 154 EDC was a step up in blade performance. The fit and finish on the Cammilus is alright, but try a torque test on one some time.

Hey glockman.....hope your fire insurance is paid up bud :). I haven't found anything at or below the Sebbie's price that can even come close. The Sebenza is possibly the most versatile folder design to date. Add CRK's quality and attention to detail and you have one of the best values out there.

I love all of my Sebbies (and Mnandi's) ! They're fantastic knives :D . . .but, the "woody's" definitely slid the Sebbie into the "overpriced" catagory ! Think about it. . . Take a Sebbie, throw 2 small pieces of stabilized wood on the scales and come up with a $500+ knife. . . Hmmmm........

Yeah yeah yeah. . .I know. . .the scales are milled to exact tolerances to accept the wood. . .

But back to the intent of this thread. . .

I have several of JSP's blades (and shoulder rigs) and they are awesome ! I wear one everyday ~ when at work. And I've worn one, periodically, when off duty ~ concealed ~ and you'd never know it. It's purpose (design) is solely for self-defense (offensive and defensive). It's the most rugged knife that I've ever owned and has taken a beating ! It's also the sharpest blade (and I mean super scarey sharp) that I've ever seen, maintains it's edge through extreme hard use and the edge is easily field dressed. It has been close and personal once. . .and I'm here to sing its praises. :)

But that's my opinion.

What's more important ~ it's your money and your desire. . .get what makes you happy ! And sincerely hope that you enjoy the hell out of your knives !

Hi All

With respect to Blade rigger

I feel that his Knives are of very high quality and nice to look at but I feel that they are high priced also.

I realize that there are a lot of costs to R&D and tooling and all that but look at his credit card knife ( $79.95 )for a piece of steel sharpened on the corner ( the originals did not have a clip ) and a hole in it for tactile recognition.

Shoot I made something similar but totally different for a friend who looked at this and said wouldn't it be great if it looked like this.
and it only took me about half an hour to make it. I would feel ashamed to charge this much.

IMO too expensive.

Sorry

OK, back to the Bladerigger knives.
Yeah, they are expensive.
Not my style either, but they do look well made, and that stuff they put on the handles is intriguing.
However, I'd like to know what kind of steel they use for the knives. Unless I'm completely blind, I didn't see any mention of it on their page.

Yes, you would think they could bother to state what steel they use, but at those prices I guess you are just supposed to assume it's the best available.
I think I read on the JSP forum that it is either A2 or Bg42.

As for that coating on the handles, it looks kinda funky to me, but I guess maybe it grown on you, like a fungus or something.

As I said before, there are some really nice looking knives on that site, but I would be ashamed to charge anyone those kinds of prices. Of course, it's not my site, they are not my knives, it's not my time, and I am free to also make knives and charge whatever I want, so the point is moot really.

I would like to ask though, would it be offensive to ask another maker to copy one of those designs?

keep in mind here that these would be normal (or even low!) prices for a custom by someone like darrel ralph, or Tom Mayo. If these knives have a comparable level of quality (and indeed, they seem to by all reports). Than isn't that fair.
