Most Popular Knife Brand

You're kidding, right? There was a direct quote from one of the guys at ESEE regarding their parting ways with DPX as that DPX is shooting for a larger market, where ESEE WANTS a smaller, more hardcore market.

Zero

Yeah, I can't really imagine many folks outside of knife nuts (in one form or another) are really familiar with esee knives...

I read on a french site that since its beginning in 1890, 260 million Opinels have been made.

Wow, that's impressive!

I got curious and Wikipedia'd Victorinox. It says they made 34,000 SAKs (I assume they mean folders), 38,000 multitools, and 30,000 household knives each work day of 2006! Assuming a five day work week and 53 weeks in a year, that's around 27 million knives just in 2006.

In 2006, they had 900 employees, while they were up to 1700 in 2009.

An article linked to their Wikipedia page says their operating income for 2009 was about $500 million USD.

I'd guess the best open data set is amazon.com's knife sections sorted by "bestselling"--at least for bestselling in the U.S.

Just for fun, the top three from each are:

Sports & Outdoors › Hunting & Fishing › Hunting › Hunting Knives ›
1. Smith & Wesson CK5TBS Bullseye Extreme Ops 4.1" 40% Serrated Black Tanto Blade
2. Set 3 Ninja Stealth Black Throwing Knives with nylon case
3. Spyderco Tenacious G-10 Handle Folding Plain Edge Knife

Tools & Home Improvement › Power & Hand Tools › Hand Tools › Knives › Folded Knives ›
1. Smith & Wesson SWMP5LS M&P Linerlock Knife with 2nd Generation MAGIC Assisted Open and 40% Serrated Drop Point Blade
2. Gerber 06079 Folding Clip Point Serrated Gator Knife, Box
3. Gerber 30-000176 Epic Knife, Serrated Edge

Sports & Outdoors › Outdoor Recreation › Camping & Hiking › Knives & Tools › Folding Knives ›
1. Victorinox Swiss Army Ranger with Classic Pocket Knife
2. Victorinox Swiss Army Tinker and Classic Knife Combo
3. Victorinox Swiss Army Champion Plus Pocket Knife

It seems like S&W, Gerber, and Victorinox are in the running. If I had to guess, I'd say Victorinox because they dominate the whole first page of "bestselling" in that last section.

S&W and Gerber (and the Spyderco Tenacious) are China-produced.

It's not until we get to the SAK buyers in the above results that we get to anyone in the mass market who has a damn clue.

Probably Victorinox. Of the knives that people like here, Buck and Kershaw. Others like ESEE and Spyderco cater specifically to a niche market, so even though they're really popular here, they're very small companies. You'd think that Spyderco was much larger than it is in particular, but they only have 38 employees last I checked, and they're the smallest of the big 3 production folder companies.

Most likely Victorinox, not only well-known in all parts of the world but also readily available. Many brands mentioned above are not well represented outside the U.S. or Europe.

I'm going to also go with Victorinox.

I cannot speak for the World, but here in my little part of the planet - even the most extreme anti knife person knows about swiss army knives, and knows someone close to them that carries one every day.

My guess would also be Victorinox, hands down.
You run into those red scaled beauties everywhere...
Owners are old people, young people, man, woman, kids....
You've gotta love 'm.
They have models for every taste and every situalion and have been around for ages.
It's the first image that comes to mind when someone sais "pocketknife"
:)

Ginsu or some other Ron Popeil knife. I've seen more of those in households than any other. Especially in homes of seniors. Maybe followed by Washington Forge or Farberware.

Don't rule out Okapi either.
