Most powerful whistle

Apart from the one that escapes your lips at the sight of Angelina Jolie, which whistles are ear drum shattering? Fox? Storm?

I bought 5 Jet Screams. It will make your ears hurt and ring if you blow it in the living room. Both my kids have one for walking to and from school, my wife has one and my wifes friend has one. Mine is in my truck console. Wicked loud.

Jet Scream works for me !!!

What a great pic!
I have a Fox 40 on my pack and it seems to "turn my ears off" when I blow it. For a few seconds my ears simply do not work. I'd say it is loud enough.

The light is gone today, so no images...

But, tomorrow, I will post my whistle assemblage, and give you my thoughts on them

I don't prefer any of the so-called 'survival whistles". I have done 'testing' with different people listening, at range, and against background noise (foliage rustling, wind and waves).

Fox has a new model soon to be released that is over 120 dbs, and some other improvements.

You guys that are hurting your ears with your whistles, know that YOU ARE HURTING YOUR EARS. When you use it, always close off your ear canals with you hands/fingers and teach your kids to do likewise. You can't hear the calls of your rescuers if your ears aren't working. :)

I EDC a Fox 40, modded like Doug Ritter's own, so its smaller.

Have several of the ACME Tornado 2000 whistles, for life vests, Packrafts and PSK's. I bought them because they are described as the worlds most powerful whistle. To say that they're loud is an understatement!

A BF member recently posted his modded Tornado, which is a lot smaller.

We have Storms, Fox40 & Fox40-mini whistles on various kits.
Of these, it seems to me the Storm is loudest/carries best, but it's bulky.
I use it on my off-road motorcycle pack.
We use mostly Fox40 & mini's on EDC & hiking kits.
Any whistle better than none.

I'd like to see some objective evidence - Mythbuster's style - about which is loudest. I have a few of the Fox 40 mini, and they are dang loud, inexpensive, and pretty small, so thats good enough for me. I have one on my keys.

Fox40 is my all time favorite, but damn i wish they would make it from a slightly less brittle material.

Loudness is not the only thing to consider. I think lower tones carry farther, or are easier to hear. There are a few real experts here that may chime in.

As loud as a whistle sounds when you are the one blowing it, it's surprising sometimes to discover that the sound doesn't really carry that far--especially if you're in the trees. I always test my whistles with an interested friend.

Another thing to consider is difficulty in blowing. If you're a little kid, or are injured and weak, you may not be able to effectively use that loud whistle. I have an ACR rescue whistle. I remember it as being easy. My Jetscream takes a good blow. It might be too much for a young child. I carry a Fox 40 mini.

G'day Scott Free

I make no claim to being an expert :D

However it is a scientific fact that lower pitch sounds travel further in dense woods

Combine this with the fact that most older people have lost the ability to hear higher pitch sounds (through a life time of hearing damage), then I am of the opinion that a lower pitch whistle with a high amplitude would be a better option :D

Kind regards
Mick
