Most Reliable Shotgun Type? Best Cartridge?

Are there any replacement magazine plugs for the Mossberg 500 that's better than the thin wooden dowel that comes with the shotgun? Thanks.

Coote,
If you come out to CO, and find yourself in the western part of the state, drop me a line. I'd be happy to let you blast away with my Mossy 500, Lee-Enfield .303, Winchester 30-30, SxS 20 ga, glock 9mm, glock 10mm, and my buddy has a nice .45 and .357 revolver he'd loan me, I'm sure.

Thanks for the comments once again. Good to know that there are some kindred spirits out there.

I agree that a double shotgun can provide the security of two complete gun actions in one weapon. If one side doesn't work, hopefully the other will.

Go big or go home :) Well if I do come over, I'd say that Colorado probably would be on the itinerary because that is where my brother lives. It is quite serendipitous (?) that it is also a gun-friendly state. Yeah, gotta say I wouldn't mind squeezing the trigger on a .357 just to see what happens. I'll be wearing earplugs though.

I am a licenced firearms owner. This involves a test and police checks. The licence has to be renewed (and paid for) every ten years. This is a trifle bothersome because we were first issued a relatively inexpensive 'lifetime' licence. But after they learned who we were, things changed (although I don't believe that it was a cunning plot.... just bureacracy and pressure from non-hunting city dwellers I suppose).

While I like to have access to firearms, I am confident that my meat supply won't dry up if I don't have a gun because I have already proved that home made arrows and snares can provide more than I can eat. However I very much doubt that guns will be taken away from people who have a legitimate reason for using them in this country. Thank goodness.

While the firearm information is interesting, I think experts agree that the best defense against bear is avoidance through making noise so the bears know you're coming, and controlling smells so they don't seek you out. If face-to-face with a grizzly or black bear you'll likely be much better off with a high-quality pepper spray than any firearm.

I suspect polar bears might be an exception to that, as they've been know to stalk/hunt humans.

Isn't this forum wonderful. Thanks for all the comments, and thanks for the invitation to come and play with your guns.

I now know more about bears and shotguns.

I don't have a trip planned, and I have a heap to do here at home for a while yet. Just in the process of selling a home and building a new one. Plus we work for ourselves and we are heavily committed.

With appreciation..... Coote.

This is a follow up on my earlier diatribe from page 2 (I believe)...since the OP wanted the most "reliable" shotgun and the words "defense" were used in his OP; I made a recommendation to stay away from the 870 Express series because primarily of the locking integrated cross bolt safety system (Remington's ISS) which is unreliable for a defense shotgun (either in locked or the unlocked) position. I forgot to link this .PDF from Remington which clearly delineates the key differences between their sporting "Express" shotgun and the "Police" line which I recommended earlier.

I hope this .pdf helps. http://www.remingtonmilitary.com/articles/870ExpvsPol6-30-05.pdf
