Hi!

I was hoping to get some ideas from people about the best deals in knives out there. And I don't mean state of the art, knife-geek knives. More like where you bought a cheap knife and were startled to find that it was really quite good.

An Opinel which is ugly and has bad ergonomics, but which, for a $9 knife, has an absolutely fantastic blade. A Byrd which you paid $20 for, but which you think can hold its own against similar $100 knives. Or even a Ranger which set you back $110, but which you think is close to as good as a $600 Busse... knives which are, in one way or another, shockingly good values.

Any takers?

The Avalanche is pretty killer. 80 bucks for G10, S30V and AO. Rock solid feel and F&F.

The Kershaw storm is nice. SS handles with grip inserts, recurve blade of sandvik, framelock, 30 dollars.

The d`allara drop point is killer at 55 dollars. Large, super tough folder with the sharpest VG10 blade I've ever used and a bb lock.

Agreed.
Add:
Camillus CUDA EDC - $25, great look, steel framelock, good fit and finish

Which 600 dollar busse are you refering too? There isnt anything else out there liek some of them. None of my busses cost more than 340 after shipping.

Spydercos are a damn good value i reccomend the endura. As for fixed the ranger line are great. The strider ED is a kick ass blad for the money

Any Mora bladed knife

I second that! You can get a mora fixed blade for about $5-8 at the local sport store. It's both ugly and plasticy, but for most people it is a more than sufficient fishing/camping/allround knife.

List price for a limited edition Fusion Battle Mistress is $697, but $195 in options are available, so I guess you can take your pick at up to almost $900. Base price for the standard model is currently $387 before shipping.

Glad to hear you got yours while the prices were lower.

Ok i thought you were talking about the feild grade. Those customs can indeed get pricey.

But then again you get what you pay for and busses are the best of the best.:D :D

Swamp rats are a good compromise between price and preformance. Soon though the scrap yard line will be out and the price to performance ratio will be through the roof.:D :D :D :D

Camillus EDC - good stuff :)

SAK knives are under appreciatted. How many times have you heard someone say they carry one to lend-out, in case it may be confiscated, as a basically disposable knife, etc.?

Yet, they know they will fullfill the basic function needed.

Kershaw Storm II for $30 at Wal-Mart! Pictured here with Spec-Bump my EDC.

Great ERGOs, good Sandvik 13C26 steel, Frame-lock, Opens smoothly, and great price!

The Spyderco Delica and Endura 4 are steals at under $50 each. They really should cost more, if only to keep me from buying so many multiples of each!

Cheap:
1.Buck Juno--a killer knife for the low price.
2.Bought a CRKT fixed Falcon about a week ago--$20 and its a decent little knife.
3.ANY SAK.
4.Buck 110-- can be found on sale several times a year for $20---you can't beat it.

Not so cheap:

Buck Nighthawk--got mine sub $40 at Wally's---can't beat it.
Spyderco Delica and Endura----have 1 Delica and I'm up to 3 Endura's now--excellent.

I own like 4-5 Kershaw's and they have all been pretty much a disapointment---probably won't catch me buying any more--my most expensive one is kind of a junker actually---paid around $100 for it 5-6 years ago and it pretty much fell apart after about 3 months of EDC---my cheaper ones have held up better but ergonimcs and edge retetion have been abissmal.

Finally got my first real Benchmade(211 blue line) about a week ago--so we'll have to see about this company---bought a red line knife about six months ago and promptly lost it in 2 weeks--so not enough time to form an opinion on a even a cheap Benchmade

Why not mention which Kershaw? I own over a dozen and they are great.

Of course SAK'S esp used Wenger's(check Tim out at felinevet or SOSAK on the other forum) which seem to go cheaper than Vics and I would say Case's CV line were you get your moneys worth.
Opinels and Mora's are a natural also.

Kap

For fixed blades, if you want something more for chopping type of work or general abuse, rather than the excellent cutting ability of a Mora, the Ontario Spec line holds up pretty well. You'll want to really reprofile the edge though.

Cheap, but good enough to go against anything?

SAK Soldier, for starters. Aluminum grips, and a blade that cuts like a laser. Toss in Opinels (6 and 8 are my faves) and any Case in CV. :D
