Most useful stuff I learned at Ethan's Fall Gathering... How about you?

speaking of stupid -- I got 7 stitches in my leg this afternoon.
10" corona folding saw is SHARP! (but leaves a really ragged wound)
told the doc I rinsed it with peroxide, covered it with gauze, then applied pressure for 10 minutes before my 20+ minute drive to the clinic.
he said I did it right and wondered where I learned that.

thanks doc!

You did well. Shit happens. I cut myself all the time. You did exactly the right thing to bail yourself out.

all the way through the dermis in a couple of spots - adipose tissue showing.
lots of debris, leaf litter & such in the wound, so he had fun scrubbing then picking bits and pieces out -- and no, I did not take pictures.
in the past I did not know about taking the extra time for the direct pressure -- much less bleeding this way!

You did exactly as I described in the talk. Very well done.

Hope it is well soon - your campout is about to start if I remember correctly..

I am so not liking that I have to miss that campout. A bunch of stuff fell into my lap in the last couple days, one thing this morning that I have to take care of tomorrow at 1PM. I can't make this one and I hate it.

i really learned alot about burn treatment and backwoods wound managment . would love to get into more get home bags and edc carry conversations .

When'd you put the vaseline on?

I got to use the burn story with wife. There was a bread tie next to the eye and when she went to grab it and move it she got a small burn. Like Ark said I quickly fired off cold water, then I went and got the benedryl and some Ibuprophen. She asked where I got that and I told her at the Gathering. I also said we learned from Ethan not to touch hot things around the stove.... She didnt laugh, but I did. Doc thanks again for all the great information.

non-occluded dressings and vaseline and such for the win...

though honestly, i use vaseline mostly to start the grill. those wee cottonballs burn like magic in ever so damp charcoal :)

even at 32 dF :D

while the trip to the ER slowed down my campsite prep (never did get that outhouse built), the weekend went well and a good time was had by all who showed up.
no sign of infection, good wound closure, will leave a scar, but not a bad one.

Yay.....Glad the weekend went well and the wound is healing up without incident.....Good news indeed.....

Ethan

Erik - hating that I missed the campout. Glad your hand is healing well. I'm gonna try my best to make the December 7th hammock hang in. I think I can rig something up to be more comfy. Just need to find some naturally occurring insulation.

one of the guys this weekend made an underquilt out of a woobie and one of the old-style "rescue blankets" with the tarp on one side any mylar on the other. He than used some shock cord to attack it to his ridgeline to make the entire thing work like a pea pod.
I picked up some reflectix (mylar/bubblewrap/mylar) but did not try it out this weekend because it was close to 60 at night both thursday and friday. If you have a double layer hammock, slide a piece of this between the layers.

i saw at the store the other day, what appears to be flocked tyvek jacket and pants, lined with mylar... columbia? "make your own heat". those things look *toasty*, and could be the shiznit for ultra-light emergency carry gear. suh-wheet.

that said, the space blanket bivees are petty handy... even the tarp style heavy duty ones. carry something!
