Most you would pay for a pair of shades.

I have paid $400.00 for Shades. A pair of Revo and I also bought a pair of Revo and had custom made prescription lenses made for them. that ran me over $400.00 but damn they look good!

You will see the same thing with any sort of enthusiast. They can justify dropping large sums of money on their interest, and cannot understand why others consider it folley. However, when looking at the sums of money others spend on their interests, the others must be fools.

I bit the bullet and got prescription sunglasses. The brand is Costa Del Mar and the model is Savanah. I paid way too much ($300 was MSRP before the conversion to prescription), but I figured that's what I needed to do for prescription sunglasses.

Pricing perscription sunglesses are sort of unfair. My everyday pair cost well over $500 without the vision plan deduction.

As far as off the rack sunglasses, my limit used to be around $125. Now that I bought the Oakley Penny, it's $300.

I like the Revo lens too, but I prefer Oakley's frame styles.

The amount that you're willing to spend on an item is proportional to the value of the itme I your eyes...I spent $1300 on my road bike, and that's low to medium in the range. My friends can't belive how much I spend on knives and flashlights. (Hey those Surefires are not cheap!)

The pricing is a bit unclear on prescription sunglasses unless explained. Mine were $300 if bought as NON-prescription sunglasses. Without their "extra special" non-prescription lenses, the price dropped to $150 (just for the frames). With prescription lenses added, it bumped up to almost $500. I paid $395 after my insurance discount.

Still too much. I remember the $130 pair of Serengeti driving glasses (non-prescription) I bought (about 10 year ago) thinking that was a fortune!

Well, it does depend on how much your vision and eyesight are worth to you. I'm a radiologist, so since looking at pictures is what I do for a living, I have a fairly liberal glasses/shades budget. First off, if you shoot, fish, hunt, golf, fly a plane, or mess around with boats, BUY a pair of prescription polarized glasses. Shooters, hunters or outdoors types should definitely go for the OSHA frames and lenses, with removable side guards. They have saved my eyes more than once when shooting steel targets and marlin fishing when a hook was pulled boatside. UV protection/anti-reflective or mirrored coatings can be added to prescription polarized lenses today and they are worth it. I'm not too much into designer frames so, I save some there, but I'll easily rack up $500-600 for a pair of prescription shades. My more stylish wife and shooting partner has paid well over $700! The bottom line is you can't hit what you can't see, and on the boat they're absolutely critical. By the way don't forget the UV protection, unless you want premature catarcts! As for the "cool" appeal, I don't know about paying that much for "cool", safety and protection, no doubt about it!

I paid $390 about 1-1/2 years ago for Oakley X-Metal Juliets with prescription lenses.
They were better than any other brands I had, because the lenses came from oakley (I had to send them my rx):D

Oakley X-Metal XX = $298 (with sales tax), then I found some great deals on Ebay. Got 3 of 'em. One for me, one for my wife and one as backup.

I went to the local Oakley dealer last year to buy a pair of X Metal/Ruby Juliets, but they had sold them an hour before I got there.

I ended up with the Plasma/Fire Juliets.

This thread seems to be developing a common thread!;)
To wit:

Sunglass Person: "You actually spent $400 on a knife? You're nuts!"

Knife Person: "You actually spent $400 on a pair of sunglasses? You're nuts!"

To each his own.

And then there is the person who loves both and finds himself out $800 at the end of the day, not to mention other hobbies! Maybe I need to rethink such expensive interests.

$150, on the web will get you a great pair of Ocean Waves, Ray Ban or Costa Del Mars. I will only buy glass lenses, poly what ever I scratch in a week to the point of being useless. Have owned and liked Gargoyle classics but scratched them quickly.

Never could figure folks who pay big bucks for Oakleys with plastic(poly) lenses. The only plus is impact resistance I suppose.
