Motor and controller

The one thing I'd point out to someone buying this for a grinder is that the enclosure on the speed control is an open design. The little slots for cooling also allow dust and grit to get in there, which creates a bit of concern. Metallic dust in the enclosure can eventually short out the controller.

Typically, the sealed NEMA4 enclosures add $100+ dollars to the cost. You might want to call and discuss your application requirements with the sellor before you buy to assure yourself there is actually economy in buying this motor package over, say, the $814 110V 1.5HP package that Rob offers for the KMGs, which has a dustproof enclosure.

This is how I handled the dust . I made a enclosure out of wood and some lexan.

I think I have about $400 total in the motor and controller and box.

That's neat, Ken. Is that a pot over on the motor for controlling speed, then?

Yes, its a pot with a on off switch. I could have controlled the motor from the controller but then not able to keep out of the dust. I bought the box, pot and switch from Radio shack for under $20 if I remember right.

I know your not going to be sorry , slowing and being able to vari the speed of your grinder is one of the best things you can do for your grinds. Good luck on your conversion!

I would double check and make sure the motor has a base. It says C-face and not all of them have a base. I would also stay away from the open enclosure VFD. For that kind of money I would spend a little extra and get a VFD package from Rob at Beaumont Metal Works. If you are patient and look around (ebay, Surplus Center) you can put something together for a lot less money.
