Motor and VFD for a free grinder?

A relative heard about my new hobby and gave me their 2x48 grinder, but it's missing a motor. Apparently, it had a 3/4hp on it when it was new.

So, I'm wondering if it's possible for me to add a 3/4 or 1hp 3 phase motor and an accompanying VFD, and that would let me reverse and control the speed?

put up a picture of it. But yes you can put a vfd and 3 phase motor on it.

If the motor was a C-face type, then you should be fine to change it to 3phase/vfd. If the grinder part clamped on some sort of shoulder that was specific to the manufacturers motor, it may be more of a problem. A photograph of the grinder you have with a good clear shot of the attachment part will help us decide.

It might only need a start capacitor. If not, the motor can be rebuilt.
As the grinder actually bolts to the motor, I don't know if you can use a 3ph/vfd.

Find some one in your area that rebuilds electric motors and have it checked, may just need a capacitor or something simple to fix.
Or they can suggest a replacement.

To explain it simply:

That grinder uses a motor with the front plate having a round projection, probably with a groove in it.
The grinder part clamps on the projection and groove.
Any change of motor would require the exact same motor and frame. The only source would be the manufacturer of the grinder.
To change to a 3Ph motor and VFD would be virtually impossible.

You can take the grinder part off the motor and take the motor to a motor shop. They can likely repair the motor and you will have a basic entry level grinder for the cost of the motor repair.

An adaptor to fit to a Cface motor would be simple to make.
None the less, Simple and inexpensive are different things.
Having a adaptor made will exceed the cost of that machine.

I'm wondering if this isn't just a standard size motor, but with the end cap that holds the grinder attachment screwed on to it? If it's say a 56c size motor, if I couldn't screw off that end cap and screw it on to a different 56c 3 phase motor.

"....If it's say a 56c size motor, if I couldn't screw off that end cap and screw it on to a different 56c 3 phase motor."

It would be unlikely unless you could find the same motor from the same manufacturer. The 56C is the mounting bolt pattern and spacing, not the motor size and shape. The first thing you need to do now is remove the grinder attachment and show us the front of the motor. It is possible that the mounting collar is bolted to the motor and would fit another one.

There is a phone number on the motor. Have you called and asked the price of a new motor from the manufacturer?

Also, you seem to be resisting getting the motor fixed? It would likely cost less than a new motor. It may just be a bad switch or a capacitor.

I did call Grainger and they make a 3 phase motor of the same size, but it's over $400 new

I can fix or replace the current motor, but I'd like to try and set it up so that I can control the direction and speed if possible

56 frame are all the same diameter and therefore will accept any 56 frame endbell. That is not the NEMA frame but anything that diameter.

What was the Grainger part number?

I thought it was. That's all I need I bet I can find you a better deal.
