For what?

Baldor is tops. Your profile doesn't say where you are. Are you near the seller and picking up, or paying shipping?

Not sure what you're using it for, but 1 hp is kind of light for grinding. I've been using 1.5 hp and had I known better would have opted for 2 hp or even more. Just my .02. Phil's right - they don't come any better than Baldor. I found a 2 hp on Craigslist (lucky) for $200, and found a controller on eBay for about $80. It can be done.

This is what I think:
The price is OK, but not a steal. Check the sellers other items, and you will see similar motors for less.

It is a DC 180V 1HP Baldor TEFC motor. Top of the line , but it will require a DC drive, so plan on spending another $100.

It is big enough for a light duty grinder, but a little more HP wouldn't hurt.

It will be variable speed with a DC drive, which is a good thing.

It would make a superb disk grinder motor.

You could use it to convert a single speed tool into variable speed ( metal cutting band saw, etc.).

It will cost you another $30 in shipping, unless you can arrange local pickup.

And to add to Stacy's comments.....being a 180V motor tells me that you'll have to run your controller on 220V which may or may not be convinient.

I agree, there are/will be better choices.

I use this exact motor on my machinery at work. They have been in continuos work now for 2 years with no problems at all. If you get a good quality motor control there should be no problems. Nice thing with a Baldor is parts are easy to get.

As always thanks a lot guys! I bought a motor controller that can push it for under $40 last night. I may hold of if its not a really good deal. I was just thinking being a baldor and 180v would give it enough juice to make me never need more...I'll re consider. Just so I don't keep bugging you guys what would make the ideal grinder motor?

I would think:
DC(for var. speed)
1.5-2hp
1ph
17xx RPM
TEFC

what else should I be looking for?

Like Stacy said you could make a great disk setup and they are a wonderful tool. Just get a 9" disk that will go on the shaft. Set it up to go forward and reverse and with the variable speed it would be great.

The crazy thing about motors is that when you need one, you can't find the right one at the right price anywhere....but when you don't need one, you can't fling a dead cat without hitting a good deal.

Somehow that Murphy guy is involved. :)

I had that motor on my square wheel set up yrs. ago and had no problems . But I did not use it for profiling the blades and never ran it at full speed .

If you got a controller for $40 ,then the motor would be a good deal. You can use it on the grinder until you find a deal on a bigger one. Some folks never get a bigger motor.
Make sure the HP module in the controller is for 1HP. If not you will have to order the right size. If the controller is run on 110VAC, the output is usually 90VDC, 220VAC gives 180VDC. The motor will run half as fast on 90VDC. Make sure the wiring is connected for the input voltage you are using. There are some varieties of controllers that are different, so check the specs on yours.
