motor for 2x72 grinder

how would this 3hp motor be for a belt grinder build. I know its not 3ph so I won't be able to make it variable speed. I would use step pulleys to change the speed. Would that get the speed down low enough to do all I need? I don't know a lot about motors but I do know about fabricating so the build shouldn't be too tough if this motor is suitable.

Keep looking man. I got a marathon 1.5hp motor 1725 rpm 55c Fframe the whole 9 yards for 160 and FREE shipping.

hgrauctions usually has plenty of 3Ph motors and low shipping. They are on ebay as well as direct.

If money is no object, then order the $204 motor and a NEMA 4X VFD for $350 or so and build yourself a nice grinder with $550 or so in motor/VFD package.
"IF" money is of concern (like me), then order the $152 motor with a Chinese VFD for $120 or so, put a decent filter (no cost) over the air inlets and build a nice grinder setup with $270 or so in a motor/VFD package.
