I all! Been lurking for a while, trying to soak up as much info as possible, but haven't seen something very particular that I am looking for.

I am looking for a good motor recommendation for a either a NWGS or KMG grinder that will go into the shop I am putting together in my garage. My issue is that I only have 110 power in the garage, and don't have it in the budget to get 220 put in. So, given that bit of info, is there a good reasonably priced motor that those of you who might have one of these units could recommend? Thanks!

here are some places to look

tractor supply

grizzly.com

grainger.com

good luck

You may look into THIS motor from Grizzly. 1.5hp is about the max on 110V. I have the 2hp model running off of a 220V VFD and it works great. You'll need a 110V VFD rated to 1.5 hp to control it. The problem there is that the lower cost VFD's are not wash down rated and metal dust WILL kill them, most likely pretty quickly. So you'll either have to pony up money for a NEMA4 rated VFD or build a clean box. Check out my site for a few pics of my motor and VFD setup.

I know TECO sells a VFD that runs off of 110V and outputs up to 1hp 220V 3phase. I'm sure there are VFD's rated up to 1.5 hp on 110.

This is one thing I know MUCH about. I have had 4 different motors now for my KMG, and hands down what I should have done in the first place was gotten the one right from Rob. It's this one:

http://www.beaumontmetalworks.com/motors.html

It runs on standard 110, but if you are ever able to upgrade it will run on 220 also. It has a standard 3 prong plug, no fuss no muss after setup and wiring it is plug and play and play you will! A very powerful motor.

You want a continuous duty TEFC motor. on 110v 1.5hp is the most you'll get to run. I got my motor from rob, because leeson TEFC motors are great quality. You'll probably also want a 1725/1750 rpm motor, not a 3600rpm motor unless you want to step down the speed with pulleys even more

Electricity is one area where I am absolutely CLUELESS. Holy schnikes.....$814 for the VFD motor????????????? For that kinda scratch, I don't mind using hand files and applying a heavy dose of elbow grease. This is just a hobby for me at this point, I work in sales, but still love working with my hands. Also, I really hadn't planned on putting 2 grand into this to get started. But then again I have always been told that paying the extra $ to get quality up front really saves in the long run. To keep the WAF OK, could I start with the constant speed motor with a 3 or 4 step pulley and upgrade later? Thanks so much for helping me sort this out guys!

Hello Atama
I called every electric motor store/repair shop and found a 1.5 tefc 100v motor for $80.00. It runs my no weld grinder great just get the step pullies.

The VFD motor is NOT the only motor on that page, did you SEE the little red one?

Yeah I saw the red one but a previous posted mentioned the VFD, so I thought that might be the one that was being refered to. I would probably prefer to get a slower speed motor so that I can pay closer attention to my work until my proficiency grows alot. That should also give me the time to save up the cash to get a good VFD and get 220 put in. I appreciated everyone's feedback, it is nice to be able to tap the experience of others before going down this road myself.

Matt- Thanks, I was hoping to be able to do something along those lines.
