Motor for grinder

I really want to upgrade my grinder. I currently use a 1x30 beltsander and files on my blades. I have a limited budget. I have looked at several options and prices, from a craftsman 2x42 to a grizzly to high end and high dollar grinders. I have a Dayton 1/2 HP motor. My question is, would this motor work if I decided to go with a homemade grinder? I really haven't researched building my own grinder all that much. Thanks.

You probably want atleast a 1 to 2 HP motor to do any real grinding.

Don't buy a Ferrari and put on crappy tires if you get my drift. :)

Yep a 1/2 HP motor is just too small you will stall the belt constantly. You need a minimum of 1HP-1-1/2HP. And bigger is even better. I run a 1-1/2HP on my KMG and wish I had a 2.
