im built a kmg clone.just done in fact. i have a 2hp 220v motor. my concern is this its 3450 rpms. im going to use step pulleys with it. most places ive read about motor disscussions the 1700 rpm range is suggested. will the step pulleys slow it down enough? if not i was thinking about a 3 pulley system like a drill press......willy:confused:

I run a 3400 on both mine. I ran step pulleys on both for a while. I seldom used the biggest motor pulley and the smallest grinder pulley but the rest where fine, Jim

The motor speed is only part of the equation. You can run a faster motor, with either step pulleys or just running a smaller drive wheel. Bader grinders are direct drive 3450 rpm and have different size drive wheels available to them. If you're going belt driven, you've got both options.

More than one way to skin a cat, even more ways to make a knife. You'll be fine with the motor, if you really don't like the speed you get out of step pulleys, you can always go up or down in size on your drive wheel.

One of the things to do on a step pulley setup is to set the motor up so it can slide side to side. Then you can align it to use any of the pulley combinations. The one I have with step pulleys has the motor mounted on a plate with a 6" piece of 3/4" schedule 40 pipe welded across the top. The pipe slides and pivots on a piece of 3/4" round stock that is mounted on the grinder near its drive shaft. With the belt on the 2 largest pulleys the motor is about horizontal and with it on the 2 smallest it is nearly straight down. This way I can use any motor step on any of the grinders steps and it only takes a few seconds to change.

ib,the different hookup to give you more variations sounds great. but im not sure i understand your explaination on how you used the pipes to hook it up. is there a chance for a few pics please? also i was looking at h.f. thurs. they want 150-160 for a 2hp 120v electric marathon motor. however they also want 89.99 for an air comp. with a 2hp motor. does anybody own one of these comp.? what are the motors like? they might be a cheap alternative for a motor if only for a while till a better motor could be gotten. any ideas?...willy

My opinion is to not buy the air compressor to get the 2 HP motor.

Air compressor mfg's are notoriously bad for misstating their power ratings.
There was a lawsuit about this. The link lists all the brands the compressors were sold under
They were to stop this, but it seems they are still at it.

The air compressor is using peak to peak voltage values on the sine wave of AC power to calculate HP, while the Marathon motor is using the industry standard RMS (root mean square) of the ac wave.

Bottom line you are comparing apples and oranges. The 2 HP air compressor motor is not the same as the 2 HP Marathon motor.

If you are interested and can see them in person, read the amperage values on the plates and see if they are more comparable…

I say look in the yellow pages and find a local motor shop – lots in my area for farmers and industrial customers. I have purchased used 1 hp 3400 rpm motors for $75.

Here is a picture of the setup for the step pulleys. I have a VFD for the KMG now. My Clone runs a similar setup to this with a 4 step on the grinder and a 3 step on the motor
