Hey guys I need some help. I have a Craftsman 1x42 with a 1/3 HP motor on it and it is making a terrible noise. I took it off and when you turn the motor by hand you can feel it catching on something. Any ideas if fixable?
Thanks
Justin

If it has pulleys, make sure they are tight. I have a little 1x30 Delta that I thought was croaking. turned out that one of the pulleys had come loose. Tightened it back up and all was good! Hope that helps!

Thanks Pa, I have the motor off the machine and it is still making the noise. It was my dad's and has about 25 1/2 years of wood dust in it. I'm gonna take it apart a little and see if anything is loose?

Ok I took it apart and looked like everything was ok but I really don't know what it is supposed to look like:) a bearing out maybe? As you can tell I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to electric motors

DT5,

Have you tried to look at the Sears parts website. Some of their older stuff had good schematics that you could look at by P/N. I'd bet that somewhere on that motor there is a Sears P/N, or use the model number of the grinder to look up motor specs. Try that first, and if you hit a dead end I'll bet that somebody here will be able to help.

BTW alot of the motors on "woodworking" sanders are not TEFC (totaly enclosed fan-cooled) and metal particles from grinding knife blades will short them out. Try blowing it out with compressed air.

Good idea I did find an old manual online I will have to look at it if I can find it again.

some motors the brushes can be replaced, I have never looked at a craftsman, first generation dewalt tools had really crappy brushes, my first dewalt skillsaw needed a set of brushes every month, got tired of that and went back to makita

That means you will need to take it apart to get a look at the brushes , I would blow it out real good with compressed air, oil the berings and see if the noise goes away, if not then you will need to get into it

OK thanks John I will tear into it tomorrow.

Found out the problem. The fan had shifted about a 1/4 inch up the shaft and was just ticking the houseing. You can see in the picture where it was hitting it's all shiny. It must have moved when I was tapping on the shaft to get the pully off. It's back together and purring like a kitten. If it does it again I might have to put a small washer to keep it from moving all the way up to the jesus clip.
