Motor & VFD package ???

There are platens with lips, vvjackstraw sells them on eBay, my point was that mine hasn’t budged. I’ve heard they could drop and break. I used to j.b. Weld the glass platens on, but for me, I’ve found it unnecessary. Ymmv.
Mine is just epoxied and it is holding. Some of the posts make it seem scary dangerous.

As far as the platen “cooking”, the only time mine ever got very hot was when I taper tangs without the pyroceramic glass on it.
How long does the glass last and how do you know when to change it

I really don't mean to hijack this thread but I am also thinking about the OBM grinder (I see OP has since opted for the Reeder but the OBM setup is already pushing the limits of my college student budget lol). I am wondering what my options are for a motor given the fact that I am limited to standard 110v outlet. (My budget is already stretched very very thin so I am thinking I might have to settle for single speed and upgrade later)

Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

Thank you very much, that seems like a great option. Unfortunately I only have $700 to spend and I'll already have $555 into the frame and wheels. Can it be done for that much? Or should I stick with something like the Grizzly instead? I hope this isn't too much of a thread jack.
Thanks

No bigge on the thread-jack. IMO you should wait , and get the 2'' X 72'' grinder. From what I have read on here, many have started out with the Grizzly. But if you think about what you get with the OBM compared to the Griz. Its a no brainer. If you do go with the single speed motor, get it cheap. So when you are able to upgrade your not out a couple two-three hundred bucks.

I am just getting started myself so some may jump in here and clarify. The motor is not inclosed, meaning it will get dust in it. Also the VFD controler is not inclosed and will need to be far away from any dust or mounted in an encloser to keep the dust out. That is why I switched from the Teco to the KBAC.

Thanks a lot for your help I really appreciate it. I think you're right, worst case I'll just scrounge for a used motor locally for now.
One last question: Would this set work? http://dealerselectric.com/1-HP-1800-RPM-115-Volts-Input-Package-4.asp

Thanks again
IMHO- many knifemakers started with Grizzlies and other single speed grinders. I have a 1 hp motor with a VFD. But I had a lot to explain to my wife about my expanding budget. Also I had to add much more after the grinder. My 12" wheel was another $200 dollars. The small wheel attachment was another $150. Belts are a ton of money and you go through them quickly. Start a thread about other makers that used or are using a single speed 2x72. I have seen beautiful knives made much better than I am doing now, ground on a Grizzly.

Thank you for all the input, it's greatly appreciated. I think you are correct, with my current commitment to knifemaking and my current budget, I don't think I can justify variable speed. I've pretty much decided that I'm going to get the OBM with a single speed motor because for just $100 more than the Grizzly it is just as powerful, slower and completely upgradeable for the future.
Thanks again
