Mountain bike suggestions

BOK - my biggest piece of advice is to get one from a local shop that you trust and that is run by good people. Whether you spend $7,000 or $300, the difference brand to brand is mostly personal - I may like Specialized, and you find that Trek fits you better. But, if you order it online, or from Wal-Mart, when something bad happens, the shop will help you out at a steep price. But if you buy it from the shop, and something bad happens, the shop will usually take care of you.

Most "good" shops will also let you test bikes - not for a 3 day weekend, but for 10-20 mins. on the road to see if you like it. To answer your question...I think Giants make great bikes - awesome value.

Regarding what Crom said - I've been racing for about 8 years, and I've never bought "this year's" model - I always buy last season's model - it's a real easy way to save some money.

I'll offer up a different viewpoint.

The frame is the most important part of the bicycle....buy the best frame you can afford and the one that fits you best, then look at the components. Certainly the components have to be factored in, but they come after the frame. It's a lot more expensive to replace the frame instead of all the bits that hang on it. Too many people look at the components first....as someone said, they can be changed. If you're patient you can find last year's parts on sale and it won't cost you as much to replace things along the way.

As for specific advice, I can't help you there. Long ago I stopped buying complete bikes and just buy a good frame now...then I can build it exactly as I want it.

Thanks again for the help fellas...but I think some people dont read past the first post.

I actually ended up purchasing a Jamis Durango 1.0.

Put about 13 or so miles on it earlier today. So far so good. I like the disc brakes. They seem to be quite a bit more powerful than the V set-up in wet conditions.

It felt pretty good to be out biking again...certainly a nice change from my usual fitness routine.

Disc breaks rock. Huge step up from V-brakes. Congrats on the new bike! It definitely works a lot more muscles than you knew you had... Great workout!

I am very attached to my Ironhorse Warrior but it is out side the $500.00 range but I have had no troubles with it and I have been hitting the trails here in new england for the past 3 years.
