I was fortunate enough to run into a large black bear on opening day while hunting for elk. As I make a point of having my bear and cougar tags on me whenever they are in season I was prepared. Once I had assisted the big boar in shuffling off his mortal coil my little stonewashed, Mountain Duty wanted to play. I was able to gut, skin and cape the bear with the MD and it was still plenty sharp for all the other camp chores for the week. A couple minutes with the edge pro tonight and it is ready for whatever surprise comes next in the woods.

That's gonna taste delicious.

Take a picture of the Knife in front of a fire with a bottle of scotch on the new rug you made
I can't wait to eat him. My taxidermist will be doing the rug and that will be a year or so till ready, I will be doing the European mount of the skull, but I will take some good photos when they are done.

Daaaaaaang! I wouldn't want to run into THAT unprepared! Nice looking bear! And rifle.

I've heard black-bear meat is some of the best out there. Don't have any bears ANYWHERE near me, so will probably never know.

I wouldn't have wanted to fight him with just the Mountain Duty, bears are built kind of like gorillas, their muscles have muscles. But when I am in the woods specifically hunting for black bear and mountain lion it is usually with my longbow, occasionally with the single shot rifle.

It is excellent meat when well prepared. Some fall bears can taste a bit off when they are fattening up for hibernation if they have been eating a lot of fish or landfill trash (I have been told.) The only bears I have eaten where from huge tracts of pristine, National forest and have been delicious.

Man, I am super jealous. Have yet to have a chance to go on a bear hunt but absolutely on the bucket list. Congrats.

How heavy about?
Single shot, what caliber?

Nice looking animal, good to hear that you are going to eat him too! :D

Very cool! I've not taken the time to go after any bear, but I might get a tag next year here in Colorado. I need to look and see if the season overlaps elk/deer at all. What state are you in, if you don't mind my asking?

Thanks Garth! One of the best hunting moments of my life so far! Glad to get another of my Busse knives properly blooded in the process.

I hope you get a chance to check it off your bucket list. Absolutely worth it!

I still have to weigh the carcass, it is in a buddy's freezer right now. The skull is 10 lbs, the hide 25 lbs. I suspect he is in the neighborhood of 250 lbs +/- live weight but I will know more soon. The rifle is a .375 H&H Magnum. Can't wait to process him and start eating!

(Edit: weighed the frozen carcass today, live weight conservatively estimated at 200 lbs.)
