Thanks HDW my old friend from a long time back. I would love to go out in your area and hang for a few days. I always enjoy your posts to see Dingus and the countryside. Same here, lots of rattlers and just M.Lion sign. As for defense, I agree that a couple good thrusts may be all we get. Did I mention that we heard two graws while about 4 miles out? The only thing to do is cut a big branch and walk like you are 7 feet tall. It also helps with the sun. A small fixed blade was in hand during some tense moments. Gina was scared but I tried to get to see that they are not really there for us. They like bike riders.Great to be seeing your posts here again Bear. Welcome back.
That area looks a lot like home. And why wouldn't it? We also have a lot of mountain lions and rattlesnakes (western diamondbacks like in your photo). I've had three very close calls with diamondbacks but have never seen a mountain lion in the wild. I just see their sign, all around, all the time.
The only thing you can do about the rattlesnakes is watch your step all the time; don't ever become complacent. Concerning the mountain lions, you need to be prepared to defend yourself and your lady. Attacks are rare but are awesome in their ferocity when they occur. Minimum effective defense is a good thrusting knife (in a pouch sheath) with about a 5" to 6" blade. But a handgun of at least .38 caliber is a far better option. I carry a Kahr PM40 in my right hip pocket at all times in the wild. Never had to use it, but it's there should it be needed.
Again, welcome back bro. Look forward to more of your treks and pics.
Thanks Grampa. Off the ortega near Blue Jay and yes the Santa Anas have so much to see. We should talk about gear sometime...give me a call and we can chat.Great photos, Reuben! I don't think I've been on that trail - is it the area up by the ranger station near Blue Jay, or the area south of that? Whatever, there's more in the Santa Anas than a lot of folks realize, eh?!
That's a beautiful Mariposa lily there!
Still moving forward on the UL stuff - baseweight getting near 10 lbs! WooHoo!
man I really need one of those survival whistles!!![]()
