Mountain Lion Country-Hike

The past 4 days I have been hiking in the Cleveland National Forest in Southern California. This is a unique area of Desert and rolling hills. Lots of sage brush, cactus, oak, and Mountain Lions. I have backpacked here and day hiked about 20 times over the past 3 years. Everytime I leave that area there seems to be a Mountain Lion attack. Two people have been killed in the past few years in a near by area called Whitting Ranch. There has also been a few attacks in Caspers Wilderness Park a few miles away. Besides the many tracks and lots of scat there are the many rattle snakes.

Are you allowed to carry a firearm there, in case of an attack? I know chances are slim, but I can only chuckle sardonically I see signs like this in places I hike:

And I didn't see any survival whistle.... :D Seriously though, blessed man indeed

I hear ya

I probably would if I could. Not because it'd give me a false sense of security, but because it's one of those things I feel I'd rather "have and not need, than need and not have." Even though I know the odds of an attack are very small. I just don't like the odds of me coming out on top if I ever had to fight off a mountain lion with anything short of a gun.

Great pics man!

I was going to ask if you could carry guns on a trail known to have mt. lions on it but then I saw you were on a trail in the "disarmed American" state. :D

Great photos!!!

Looks to be a great day! -too bad that you did not get to see a lion.

Im a married man and all, but I would join that circus!!!!:D:thumbup:
That's funny Sh&@, can't believe I missed this one.
...for you Trace!

We had a mountain lion visit our camp a few weeks ago looking for a free meal.

I lit him up with my flashlight in the middle of the night and he and I both shit ourselves just a little. Lucky for him, he wasn't wearing pants.

That sounds crazy, close call. We had a scare like that 2 years before in the same area. The cat was close and we could hear him outside of our tarp. It was a long night and in the morning there fresh tracks 3 feet from where we slept!
