Mountain Lion seen in my hometown

We have had multiple sightings in CT--but DEP still says they do not exist. Current theory is that cougars are endangered so if they admit they are here then they have to dedicate manpower and resources to dealing with them and protecting them. If they do not acknowledge that they are here, they save money.

That makes more sense than population control to me...sounds logical.

this does not surprise me one bit. In Acton MA there have been dozens of sighting in the last three years as well as a decrease in fox and coyotes population.

Stay safe! :)

LOTS of deer over that way to..food source is there for sure!

I think we should transport cats and wolves to NYC and LA and all those other left fringe havens. Then we'll see how they feel about large carnivores.

I'll pretend that's a joke. We can do without covert political rants here. Everyone in New York is not a fringe leftist anyway.

Your turn your cats and wolves loose on us and I'll turn our rats loose on you. Then we'll see how you feel about really tough carnivores.

There was a big cat attack in Lancaster last month or in September. I hear the coyotes up here, not as much as I used to though. Nah, they're not here either ;).

attacks occur but are few and far between..Mostly small women or children..
My wife and children are women and small children. I just don't understand this logic. Some green weenies don't mind sacrificing my wife and children, and I should be ok with that?

I used to fish and bow hunt near the monument business on rte 27 near 2a in Acton. We walked up the railroad tracks there, next to Nashoba Brook. Alot of deer in there. If the cougars are in Acton they are surely in Wesrford, Carlise, and Concord. I guess I should be careful here in Hollis and Merrimack. The woods in Groton connect to Nashua, and Hollis, Pepperal, etc. I'll tell the boys to be careful when they are out in the woods. Oh wow, WBZ TV is featuring a story about this right now. Westford and Acton is being mentioned by the newsman. It is just breaking on the Boston stations as I type. Wow!They are saying state officials are saying it is large dogs, or cats. Yeah, right!

I think that one of the reasons that the powers that be deny the existence of cougars in N.W. Ct.[where I live and there have been numerous sightings] is that their admitting their existence would require them to allocate money ,manpower, new regs, protected areas and all the other logistical necessities to maintain a what would probably be an endangered species. Or at least one of special concern---KV

The "Species" is not endangered. It is just broadening it's range back into territory it has been removed from for a long time. Large predators are no longer an integral part of most of those ecosystems. Efforts to restore their populations to those areas, overt or covert, are in my opinion a mistake. The landscape and the ecosystems have been forever changed by man's progress. Areas of the country still exist where the species can live and thrive without near constant interaction with man which has been shown to be a danger to both man and beast.

No, there is not a big cat lurking behind every bush. But they are known to range quite a distance and are carnavores which prey on targets of opportunity, be they a dog or cat, a deer, a child or adult human. Coexistance sounds warm and fuzzy, but the truth is that it does not bode well for either the large cats or humans when they live in close proximity.

For the animal cops to fail to educate the public on their presence is a huge disservice to the People they work for and the animals they are trying to hide and protect.

There was another broad daylight suburban sighting in my area a little a while ago; it ran across a street and jumped into someone's back yard (http://cbs5.com/local/mountain.lion.sighting.2.862021.html). The local media and/or authorities are pretty good about educating people as to the risk and course of action should you encounter one. I'm not surprised with the sightings here with all deer roaming around even in the urban/suburban areas of the Bay Area peninsula. Luckily I've never encountered one while hiking, though I'm sure they're there...they just prefer to remain unseen :)

We've had quite a few sightings here in DE and the authorities always issue a statement about how the pictures don't look reliable and that it could be a large house cat.

I have not read anything printed in the media about any concern or how to deal with a large cat like that. I guess if you don't mention it or think about it then there's no problem ;)

Well,
They say it isnt so..but about 10 different witnesses have seen what appears to be a mountain lion in my hometown. My Mom and Stepfather called and said they made the news...The State of MA is denying the possibility of it being a mountian lion (Cougar) but yet one of the witnesses is the Police Chief! I still hunt there..I live a few miles away..but I go there all the time. The pictures last week of me dropping the Oak Tree were taken about 1/2 mile from the sightings! I am now wondering if bowhunting is as fun as it used to be:eek: Oh well, if I get into a scrap with it..it will get stabbed..as you guys know, I usually have WAY to many sharp things on my person at all times...and while hunting the size and number goes up:D ( I am kidding..)
Why does it seem that states deny that Cougars are around...is it because of the endangered species act..or because of tourists?? Anyway..I thought it was cool, I wish I had a link, but I havnt found anything yet..I will keep you posted. Gene

Dude, just get over to Four Seasons in Woburn, pick up a GP100, load it with some 180gr bonded softpoints, and you are good to go for the random Mountain Lion ;) It is good to see the wildlife returning, if it really is.

Now the news is on WBZ tv. I saw the story this morning. It's something many people are talking about around here. The big Boston stations are putting this story out. It will be impossible to hide the truth now. WBZ, which is the first tv station in the USA will do expose' reporting on this story. All their stories are on the WBZ website. My mother said today, that she had seen the report also and told me they were showing pictures of a cougar in Westford Mass. last year, on tv at noon today. Looks like the "cat is out of the bag", as the saying goes.

The differance between Mass. and NH is, unlike Calf., people will want to hunt these beasts down and kill them. We don't let dangerous animal live near us. I know the mentality of the hunters around here. They will want to kill a cougar and stuff the son of a gun, and put it in their living rooms. The quest for blood is strong around here. These guys kill as many deer as they can get a tag for. There are guys who pay for others to get deer tags to kill many deer. It is unbelievable. Adventures in butchery along a trail of gore.

Unfortunately this is true. I myself have never hunted, and only carry in the woods for self defense purposes. I am not against hunting, but I do know/fear that people are too reactionary around here. People would want it killed just because, and that's not right.

We have some here in the mountains of western Virginia as well, and their existance is denied.

I live back in the sticks (Roane County, WV) and have heard stories of Panthers/Mountain Lions (terms are interchangable depending on whom you talk to) - but I have only seen one.
Thankfully for it's sake, it did not come back around.

It was such a weird experience - I saw it come off the mountain and it actually walked through my yard - yes my yard - and in front of my car.

I had a Ford Focus wagon, and the body length (including tail) was from front wheel to back wheel. - It just walked at an even pace accross the way and up the other side of the mountain - never even looked my way.

Have seen no evidence (tracks/Kills) of it's return since then.
