Some time ago I posted a thread with the question "how viable is the slip-joint/lock-back traditional folder in the woods" Reference post here:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=419899&highlight=mountain

After a good season of fishing, camping, and hunting (didn't get my deer this year:mad: ) the MM performed perfectly. I never had a problem with any of the down falls of a lock back, and felt very comfortable with it in my pocket. For the most part I have always carried a fixed blade, and used a axe for heavy splitting.

The 1095 steel was easy to touch up, and did everything I needed. For a test I used it to baton through some 1" pine for shelter and fire wood purposes and it performed well. I wouldn't normally do this, I just thought I would give it a go. My Grandad carried nothing but a one blade slip joint and a axe. I think he might have been on to something;) :D

Pics shiny new:

After thinning the edge, and the season of use:

Great knife IMHO.

Great to see a blade being used, and not just ending up being collected.
And equally great to see you're happy with your choice of tools.

Great review tarmix101.........those knives have obviously been used.....and I am pleased to hear they treated you well and performed, it sounds, beyond your expectations. It's good to know that a traditional lock back and slip were able to take care of all your outdoor needs.....even spliting kindling !
This will be an invaluable reference post for those who want some guidance choosing traditional folders for outdoor use...and what they can expect. Again..well done !

I have a question or two if you wouldn't mind giving a moment more of your time.......I have read from others that they experienced some annoying "blade play" in their Mt. Man lockbacks....did you have any issue with that when the knife was new, or did any develop after some use ?
Also, I wonder how you carried the Mt. Man....loose in your pocket or on a belt sheath...what worked best for you ? Did you ever use the Mt. Man for EDC, and if so so how did that work for you ?

-Best regards

No blade play at all. I have also seen some posts about blade play. When I ordered the knife from Cumberlan knife works, I asked for one with as little blade play as possible. I received just that. So far, there hasn't been any blade play due to use, but my knife may be the 1 out of 100 that doesn't. Still I have nothing but good things to say about MY MM.

I carried it in my pocket. Back pocket for the most part. Never had a problem as far as pocket ability.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Hope this helps some others in their search for a good folder:cool:

Yes... I have EDC'd the MM for a bit. worked well. I put it in my back pocket perpendicular to my wallet, and that seemed t be best for me. As far as the blade, the boxes I cut didn't have a prayer;) :D

I notice the "billboard" is gone. Did you remove it, or did it come off with use?

I have two MM's that I'm afraid to use (S&M File & Wire, Queen Sambar/1095) so I ordered the Crimson Bone/1095 from CKW and asked Bill to pick me out a winner i.e. no blade play. This one's going into the pocket, not the drawer. Once it arrives the first thing I'm going to do is add a nice rawhide lanyard to make up for the lack of a pocket clip. These knives look very sharp in holster style sheathes, but for some reason I just can't get used to a sheath on my belt for EDC.

Thanks for the great review! Now I REALLY can't wait for it to get here!

Thanks for the review! I'm considering getting a couple of Mountain Man folders in different steels.

The blade looks a lot better used, IMHO.

Nice review! Thanks for the info...dang.. now I am thinking of getting a Queen MM. When will it end?

Just what are the down falls of a lock back?

I've personally never had any downfalls. I was speaking of other posts, and discussions I have been involved in noting the lock to be the "weak" part of the folder. Possibly folding up on you when the lock is under extreme pressure, or breaking when using a baton on the blade for splitting is a good example. I didn't have, nor have I every had any problems with a lock back.

Well my Crimson Bone 1095 arrived today. Here it is, with the aforementioned rawhide lanyard to facilitate pocket carry:
