Looking for a new hiking bag and i like the mountainsmith tour model with belt tucked in and a shoulder strap. what says the body is this worth the bucks or are there better offerings out there. basically i just want to carry a couple of water bottles, camera and the usual stuff you take on a day hike. thanks, ahgar.

I have a Tour which I modified with more of an H harness approach. Works quite well.

I have the tour, and use it very regularly. It has held up extremely well, and I like the features of that particular model.

To be more specific, for one, it is extremely comfortable. I was considering the Maxpedition fanny pack, but I chose this one because of comfort. Next is the size. If you are just carrying a couple water bottles and a few items, the compression straps will knock the size down to nothing. However, let all those straps out and you can fit an amazing amount of stuff in it.

I use mine for light day hikes, but I also either use it by the handles, or shoulder strap as kind of a purse for following the kids around :D First aid kit, water........you know all the stuff kids get into....

Hope that helps,
Brian

I have the tour. It is great for lighter loads like a jacket, snacks and a water bottle.
Once you put more weight into it, you need to use a rig like Robert H uses.
I am carrying more weight now (extra knives and larger PSK) so, I bought the Maxpedition pack because it has a wider waist belt. I have not yet had a chance to field test the Maxpedtion.

I got a prototype tour a buddy gave me when he was working as a designer for Mountainsmith. He just reached into a huge box of packs and said, "You want this?".

I used it for quite a while to stash my stuff in for work. With 2 water bottles it rides kinda funky. Best to have those extra straps.

I have a Wraith pack that I like a lot also.

thank you very much for the info i guess i'll just have to bite the bullet and plunk down some cash for one of these puppies. btw you can buy a blush pink tour from mountainsmith in the sale area for about $35, great deal. I'm secure in my manhood but i don't know it i'm THAT secure in my manhood. ahgar

I bought the Maxpedition sabrecat and have really found it to work well. Was using a TOPS modular butt pack before. The Max does have a nice thick belt and this rubberized like material on the inside that keeps it stable. It is plenty big

dude, buy the pink and krylon that MOFO!! serious!!! for that price, where is that? do they have a website?

go to there homepage {mountainsmith.com} and look in the header for products and under that look in the bargain bin. and dang it don't buy the last one. ahgar

I like mine quite a bit. It holds LOTS of gear. However, I'm thinking of selling mine and getting a small daypack w/ a bladder instead, or a small camelback. When the pack is fully loaded, it just rides weird. Especially with big nalgenes on the side. The only thing that I'm going to lose in moving from the Tour to a small backpack is my metal cup is going to fit weird.

But the durability is great! I wish it had a few more attachment straps. There isn't a place to put my knives w/ Tekloks other than right by the buckle which I don't like.

I have a Maxpedition DevilDog - I love it, but I believe it is discontinued, as I bought it on closeout...

yeah missed the devildog closeout sale by a couple of days. they appear to be nice. I can't believe i did it but i did, just got done ordering a "blush" pink tour for $35. maybe i can talk my wife into wearing it, or maybe a little ritz dye who knows. when i get it i'll let you guys know what i think. thanks again, ahgar-- otherwise known as the fat, bald man wearing a blush pink mountainsmith tour. well at least i'll provide some comic relief for people i pass on trails.

I have the Mountainsmith Recycle Daypack. At 14 liters its awful big for a lumbar pack to be comfortable. The addition of the (sold sperately) Strapettes make the difference. It definitely holds all my essentials and rides comfortably. Total price 105.00$. Kinda high but worth it.
