This movie is on my PBS station right now. I've read the book on Proenneke (One Man's Wilderness) several times. This movie is a great compliment to it. Some really great footage. I know many of you have seen it, but for those of you that have not, try to. Excellent story of what one mane alone can do, especially with an axe. You hardly see a scene when he doesn't have it with him. The man was a true master of the axe.

Dick Proenneke is my personal hero. Hard to think exactly 40 years ago, his cabin was freshly built and he was spending his first winter there. I often wonder if it is still possible to do what he did in today's age. Seems there are hardly any wild lands left that the government has not 'protected'... The area where he built his cabin is now a national park. So much for the Frontier.

Great movie and story though, it's extremely interesting and relaxing to listen to him and watch what he was able to do.

I can barely read or discuss the lack of 'open land' in this day and age, it breaks my heart.

It is/was just amazing that he could design, devise, and carve out a mechanical door hinge from a log in 45 minutes. I would have loved to have been able to just sit and watch that.

I know! It's nuts. It's a true pleasure to watch someone with such natural skill with an axe. He just finds he needs something, then boom! He gathers what he needs and it's ready. I couldn't build what he built with twice the time and power tools.

I was just getting ready to post about this. Cool that someone else is watching this too. I have it on the DVR since I can't sit and watch in one sitting. Great stuff though! He is definitely an inspiration.

Awesome movie. I'm pretty upset that I missed it. I'll have to find this one to buy!

Dangit, Germany doesn't seem to be into this kinda stuff all that much. :(
I'll put the movie on my list.(have the book inbound for Christmas :D though)

It will be in the next order i make!
:)

I didn't know this till recently, but there is a second book. Except this time its just his journal entries. Sam Keith didn't co-write it. It costs 32 dollars though. I'll grab it eventually.

WOW, what a story, seen it a long time ago and just downloaded it on utorrent..
Really makes you think about life and our current self induced stress state, I mean when you see him in his 80's out there by himself, it makes me wonder why people need that extra large starbucks and the blackberry to remind them to go to the spa so they can chill out from a hard day of money tradin' and worrying how to pay for gas in the 3rd car that is really a hummer that never touches the off road.
Bless him for doing this movie that I think should serve as a wake up call to ourselves and to the those people who can't live a minute with out the latest gizmo .
I know he left in 1993 but I wonder what he would think of are current state of affairs?

Thank you again Dick for your truely amazing and simple film.
Regards sammtv
