Movies that should never be remade

Most of the remakes out there have been absolutely horrible. Pick any number of them, they're probably going to be bad. I didn't even see the new Arthur, but it looks horrible, especially compared to the original Dudley Moore movie (Liza Minelli was probably the only bad thing about that movie). Some movies are good, first time I saw the new True Grit, I didn't like it, but a couple months later, it is a lot better than I first thought.

Checking out IMDB, I see a new Conan, a Thing prequel. Lots more that I can't even stomach. Some I am looking forward to, like the Alien prequel and the new Star Trek movie.

Some "re-imaginings" as film studios call them can be good, but most aren't. Which movies should never be touched? There are exceptions, like the Seven Samurai, which gave way to the Magnificent Seven, which gave way to the Three Amigos which gave way to A Bug's Life (yeah, I'm kidding).

I hope they never touch the original Star Wars, George Lucas already butchered the new three. Indiana Jones should not be touched. The Godfather, that would be horrible.

What movies should not be remade?

Exactly. A masterpiece.

The Graduate.

Gone With The Wind

The Maltese Falcon

Westside Story

North by Northwest

+1

+2 for Casablanca

The African Queen belongs in that list as well

Patton

Forest Gump :p

The Quiet Man
The Searchers
The African Queen
The King And I
The Sound Of Music
Heaven Knows, Mr Alison
The Tall Men

The Day The Earth Stood Still. It is one of my favorite SI-FI movies. The remake sure butchered it. They turned Gort into tree hugger.:barf:

The new True Grit was OK, but I couldn't understand a word Rooster said.

Jaws. They had better never - ever - try to redo Jaws.

When they re-did Oceans 11 we were shown that nothing is sacred in Hollywood. :(

I don't care if it's a movie or a song, if the new one can't bring something new to their version, then they shouldn't do it. Patsy Cline's version of "Crazy" is a good example of an improvment over the original.
Movies are re-made for one of two reasons. Either someone or a producer already owns the rights to the script, and doesn't have to create one nor pay for it. Or, the new computer animation can "improve" the effects of the original. There may be other reasons, but these two are the biggest.
A great movie often is great due to the actor(s) and chemistry. You can't recreate certain magic, it can't even be imitated. Can you imagine anybody trying to re-make "The Quiet Man"? It would simply be a tribute to the original chemistry.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.
Everything about this film is great, from the acting, cinematography, to the pacing, and epic scale.

Apocalypse Now.
Dark, absurdist, and positively-nihilistic social critique that's brilliantly directed.

Kagemusha.
Most people will argue that Ran is better, but I prefer the pacing and cinematography of Kagemusha. The blocking/composition of almost every scene is incredible.

I'm opposed to remakes because it's a cop-out way for studios to make money without investing any real effort. If it was instead an attempt to tell the same story in a different, equally-good-or-better way, I'd like to see a few remakes like:

Last of the Mohicans.
This was great, but tragic because Fox made Michael Mann cut an hour off the film. The story always seemed incomplete to me, and this is why. F*@&n' bean counters and marketing dept. made him throw away 1/3 of the film! You'd have to get Micheal Mann and Wes Studi back though...who else could do Magua?

I am all for remaking movies....

It is a way to bring new generations in touch with previous ages of cinema revitalize classics.Mad Max would be an EXCELLENT movie to remake again.....the outfits in the original were a little to .....cheesy....grown men in speedos and football pads...seriously......

I agree, in a way, but it ruins the movie for the older generation....makes it disappointing.
