Movies that should never be remade

I just heard they're remaking a cult hit favorite of mine and I AM FRIKKING, STEAMING, KICKING MAD!!! :grumpy::thumbdn:

But first -

+274 on Casablanca!

Second -

Last of the Mohicans.
This was great, but tragic because Fox made Michael Mann cut an hour off the film. The story always seemed incomplete to me, and this is why. F*@&n' bean counters and marketing dept. made him throw away 1/3 of the film! You'd have to get Micheal Mann and Wes Studi back though...who else could do Magua?

You instantly get an upgrade on your "man card" for any mention of a Michael Mann work. One director who (mostly) does no wrong ("cough" Tom Cruise/Collateral "cough", "uhurm")!

Now WTF got me mad enough to reference someone's mother in bad way!?!!

I just read they're re-making THE CROW, where the late Brandon Lee, Bruce's son, died tragically!

While it's certainly not Oscar-vintage, but gaddamn, that movie was absolutely "balletic" in the violence and Brandon could actually act! You need to see it if you haven't yet!

RIP Brandon and to your dad too!

Well, if they do a good job it's ok with me, but it's ugly when they mess it up.

Guess what!

I'm going to give it a preemptive :thumbdn:

I don't know about the remake, but I want to see that documentary about Alejandro Jodorowsky and his failed attempt to make the first Dune movie. Been wondering about that project for years.

http://www.duneinfo.com/unseen/jodorowskys-dune/

"The documentary (JODOROWSKY'S DUNE) covers cult film director Alejandro Jodorowsky and his 1974 attempt to create a big-screen adaptation of Frank Herbert's seminal science fiction novel, DUNE. While the ambitious production collapsed after two years, Jodorowsky's team of then relatively unknown concept artists continued exploring the themes and styles started on the project and ended up changing modern science fiction forever: H.R. Giger went on to Ridley Scott's masterpiece ALIEN, Dan O'Bannon wrote ALIEN and TOTAL RECALL, Jean "Moebius" Giraud created artwork and futuristic worlds for THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, TRON, and THE FIFTH ELEMENT and Chris Foss would go on to work on ALIEN and SUPERMAN."

Speaking of Cult Classics, there is one that I'd like to see redone. I'll probably lose some points for this one but, Remo Williams - The Adventure Begins.

The original spent way too much time with his training and could have opened the door for more of the Destroyer series to make the big screen. Being set in the modern day, CURE would also have much more technology to exploit.

They're remaking Straw Dogs, but looks like they have eliminated the infamous rape scene. I guess modern day audiences dont have the stomach for it. Pathetic!

Sorry guys, but to me the movie was quite a disappointment (I'd read the book first).
The only character casting they got right were the Harkkonens and the Bene Gesserit reverend mother.
The special effects look really dated and they never really got the mix of technology with feudal overtones right.
The props and sets were too shiny/new. and the delivery from most of the actors was terribly flat.
I personally think it's a prime candidate for a remake.

My choice for never remake would be Blade Runner, although if they did film "Do androids dream..." with the mercer references that'd be forgiveable.
Sometimes films have to be remade to get them closer to the original book. Dracula is one example. I always wanted to see "the Garfield honour" filmed properly. The film was in B&W and starred (I think Rex Harrison) and the only thing it had in common with the book was the title, which was common practice in those days. Frank Yerby wrote with a gritty realism which would be much better suited to todays audiences.

Also point of info. The seven samurai was a remake/adaptation of the Magnificent Seven. Sergio Leone and Kurosawa ended up with a reciprocal agreement in that Kurosawa adapted the magnificent 7 story and Leone adapted Yojimbo and then the sequel Seijuro (Fistful & a few dollars more)

I always thought that Seven Samurai came before Magnificent Seven. Regardless, both movies are excellent. I also did not recognize that Leone made Magnificent Seven. Yojimbo, then Fisftul of Dollars then Last Man Standing...

Blade Runner should not be touched. The setting of the movie is less than ten years away, something eerie to think about. The Crow was a great movie, the sequels were pretty bad, what little I saw.

blazing saddles...could never be done again

My wife and I both said the same thing as we were watching it on one of the satellite channels a couple of weeks ago. All the N words were bleeped.

Patton.

In Heaven's name ... never even think about re-making Patton.

I don't think any of the current crop of Hollywood commies has any interest in it.

Usually I don't like it when a classic movie gets remade, but the exceptions can be sci-fi/fantasy movies. A good sci-fi story will hold its significance, but the nature of unpredictable technology has made many "classics" completely dated.. "Alien", for example is a classic, but the computers are laughable. It's hard for the new generations of film viewers to appreciate these classics when the "technology" undermines the movie. Ditto "2001", "Logan's Run", "Blade Runner", and such. Some obviously should remain untouched, but every 25 years or so, a good sci-fi story can be due for a remake.

Blade Runner should not be touched. The setting of the movie is less than ten years away, something eerie to think about.

I bought the Blade Runner anniversary DVD set. The original holds up surprisingly well. One of the things mentioned in the documentary was that Blade Runner was that last major movie shot using primarily in-camera SFX. Everything after is mostly CGI. It's still the best looking movie I can recall and I'm including the much-lauded Avatar in that.

Michael Mann is NOT so awesome after Miami Vice (THE MOVIE). Just sayin, before that I am with you, in Collateral Jamie Foxx bothered me more than Cruise...you can tell Tommy boy did his homework on how to stop threats...

Movies that don't need to be redone...

The Thing-if it weren't for that Reese's Feces eatin' ET this would have been seen by all the folks that thought Alien was scary.
Another HULK movie, admit it Marvel the idea of a giant raging homocidal nay genocidal beast is beyond your realm.
Red Dawn-this movie being remade is as necessary as herpes and a pregnancy on a first date. John Milius got it right, it is beyond this generation to understand how to run a guerrilla war that doesn't involve the game Black Ops or IPODs.

Also "Say Hello to ya mutha fo me" Mark Wahlberg is in talks to play Eric Draven....talk about terribull casting.

One of my favorites (see avatar) was the Three (and Four) Musketeers movies from the 70's. I have read the book and this is the only version that has tried to show the story as it was written. Great cast also.

Read this morning that Ridley Scott is making a "prequel or sequel" to Blade Runner. If it is the life of Deckard/original Deckard, okay. However, Blade Runner is one of my favorite films, leave it alone.

+1 for Blade Runner. Still the best and most accurate sci-fi flick ever made. I enjoy both the narrated and director's versions. Would love to see a link silenthunterstudios, Ridley Scott has been questioned about this since BR first wrapped, wonder what he has to say now.

Are you serious? Jodorowsky doing Dune? Yeah, the original movie wasn't too great (I read the book first, too) but a Jodorowsky remake would make me die...

Have you ever seen any of his other movies? Just look him up on Wikipedia, then do a YouTube search for some of his movies. I've seen two of them, and they're all so overzealously filled with metaphors as to be incoherent. Believe me, I think metaphors and symbolism are essential to create unconscious relation and depth to the story - exactly why Twilight sucks and Lord of the Flies is so great. BUT! Jodorowsky's films are so full of symbolism, it loses its magic. EVERYTHING in his movies means something. The number of characters, the number of scenes, the clothes that they wear, what they do, how they talk, the way they walk, the frog on the goddamn street means something.

His stories are convoluted and he fits the story around the metaphors, not the metaphors to correlate with the story.

Just do a YouTube search for his movie "The Mountain" or something like that. It's... odd, to say the least.

Well, there's my rant. Haha.

I just found out "Straw dogs" is remade, Not sure how I feel about it, but my first reaction was not supportive. Yes, it can be made better, but still, I wish they would just leave certain movies alone until after I die.

Trust me, you haven't lived til you take your jesus freak girlfriend to see El Topo in the big theater back in the early '70s. Of course she was warmed up pretty well by the first feature, Ken Russell's The Devils. ;)

Back to the future. If someone remakes that one I will hunt them down were ever they may be.
