I am sick of Louisiana! I need someplace else to go....where would you recommend...your home town...a place you like to visit or maybe thinking of moving there yourself? I want 4 seasons!!! Not just summer and a hotter summer. Background....ex military, daughter about to start school in next 2 years, wife wanting to get into radiology school. So education oppertunities need be nearby. I hate large cities ...ie New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Houston, Dallas, Chicago....things of that nature.....Austin is acceptable, but I want to know what you recommend... what you like...a place guns and knives aren't considered taboo. Please get me out of here!!!!!!

Interestingly, some people are moving away from here and leaving their gasfield jobs in order to move to Louisianna. Pay is better, real estate is cheaper, and jobs are easier to get.

I'd suggest you move to the mountains, but we're full-up.

Seattle or Spokane Washington
"I hate large cities"
...Last time I looked, both Seattle and Spokane were large cities..

"Norman, Oklahoma isn't the end of the world -- but you can see it from there!"

Just kidding ... :D:D:D

Can't see NJ from Oklahoma. Can see the haze rising from the highways and chemical plants.

You might like Louisville, KY. Nice size city without being too big. Good schools, University of Louisville, pretty good arts community. Good location, within 100 miles of Indianapolis, Cincinatti, Lexington. Cost of living is not bad and crime is low in most areas. We definitely have 4 seasons but I could do without the winter myself. Traffic is not nearly as bad as big cities. We have a beautiful waterfront on the Ohio River with parks, restaurants and museums nearby. Louisville Slugger Park is one of the best AAA baseball stadiums in the country.

For you wife, Louisville is becoming a major medical center. She would have no trouble finding work in medical field here. There are several large hospitals and medical research facilities downtown.

Other big employers are UPS (major hub at the airport is starting on a $1 billion expansion), Ford (2 plants here), Humana Insurance, General Electric.

Louisville is good place with a lot going for it.

I love Austin, but I suggest looking into the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area of NC. Great schools, lots of military bases in the area, great climate, two hours to the coast-three to the mountains, good knife environment including easy access to Blade each year. Reasonable standard of living. I'm hoping on a move to NC sometime soon myself, but I'm looking farther west to the Asheville area.

Well, it is a bit contradictory to say that you want a radiology school but don't want a "big city." Spokane is a mid-size city and quite pleasant. Seattle is a big city, but, depending on where you live, it can be quite pleasant. There is, I think, a difference between being geographically big and being culturally big. I think he's looking for some of the traits of a geographically big city but without the big city culture.

Austin general area is okay, but stay out of Austin. Guns and knives are soooo scary for the many sheeples there. Think about the smaller towns between Austin and San Antonio.

Gollnick, the town I live in now is about 35k people and about 50k when college is in. One of the states top radiological training school is located here (Hammond BTW) It's not big, but offers excellent schooling. I usually find cost of living is offset by higher wages...usually, or lower sales taxes offest by high property taxes or higher vehicle regisstration taxes. It all seems to ballance in the long run so COL isn't a very large concern. I actually have an uncle in Spokane working at the White Elephant Casino( I think).

Yermon, yes I have been to OK, but only in the Ft. Sill area! I wasn't impressed with southern Ok, but maybe Northern part offers more. Let me know.

Bob W, tell the people that are leaving ..DON'T DO IT!! Higher wages in a lower cost of living area for a reason. Hurricanes and Chemical plants don't have great safety track records here. And since Katrina property that once cost 70k- 100k is now 150k-350k. Property is NOT cheap in southern La! A quater acre in town usually runs 50k. I am not talking about nice subdivisions...just your avarage tiny yard. And that is what folks are doing Putting 5 apartments or shotgun houses on 1 acre to maximize profit for them....which is great IF you don't mind your neighbor looking through their window into your and reading your paper....They are ON TOP of each other. And after you pay gouged property prices, just try to get a contractor to build you a house for under 130-160 a sq foot in the next 2 years....yes, they are that backed up!
There was this little town called Chalmette that was flooded with oil waste during the hurricane...that entire place is now toxic..everyone lost Everything , but hey if they want to chance it.....go ahead. Oh yeah tell them to look into homeowners insurance first and see what it covers for the price!

But Thanks for the replies, keep them rolling in!

There has to be a list of the Radiology schools in America. Take a look at the states these schools are in, and determine which cities you'd want to live in their suburbs.

There's a little town called Mayberry somewhere in North Carolina. There isn't much in the way of jobs but it's pretty laid back and the sheriff is a heck of a nice guy. All kidding aside, NC is really nice but you might want something farther north if you want all 4 different seasons.

There is a town about 10 minites out of Austin called Round Rock. Dell computer has a lot of its stuff there. its a pretty nice place

Are you kidding?! You can't see NJ from NJ!!!

Cincinnati is well known for their medical facilities. Especially the Children's Hospital that's down here.

P.S. don't move here unless you like living in the asshole of America.
