Moving the Knifemaker's For Sale area back to the Exchange - feedback?

Definitely move back to the Exchange. I would think there are plenty more potential buyers there. Makers go to the Makers section, buyers go to the Exchange.

Kevin, you already know my opinion but I'll state it anyway to help clarify why I suggested it to everyone else.

1. The Makers' G&G forum is in here. Sheath makers, lanyard makers, etc. for the most part won't use it for that reason, even though that's where their gear belongs. They either don't know it exists or they don't want to post in a lesser known forum themselves. They seriously need to be moved out of the Individual forums and this would ease that transition. Of course there are those that do post maker made gear in the right forum, but they're the rule following minority and this will get them more exposure as well.

2. The Knifemaker area is called "Knifemaker Discussion" and the link here at the top is simply "Makers". A lot of members don't even know the Knifemakers' Market exists because "Makers" is not a section they click on when they visit. This move would mean more exposure for knifemakers. If nothing else it'll be another forum to browse and buy from for those members who just log on a few minutes a day to view the Exchange and see what they can spend their monies on (there are a lot of those).

In my opinion it gives buying members more chances to buy and makers more chances to sell and that's better for everyone. The Exchange can be the Exchange and the Knifemakers' Discussion forum can be the Knifemakers' Discussion forum.

Ok, maybe I should rephrase this - can anyone articulate any good reasons why we shouldn't move the Knifemaker's for sale areas to the Exchange?

There already is one. If we do move the forums over there, however, I can easily create a link from here to the Knifemaker for sale area in the Exchange.

That sounds like a good compromise. I like the maker's for sale section where it is now, but if it must move, then a link in the maker's section would be nice........right underneath shop talk:thumbup:;)

Spark,

First - I don't think we could ask for a better leader here than you - Thanks!!!

Second - Maybe you could ask the members were they want us makers?

Take a poll or two here - you can do that? :D

Or just give it a try??? :)

I kinda like it like it is though???:rolleyes:;)

Not being a buyer or seller here, maybe I am confused.

Where are knives sold by the maker on BF?
It's not the same place where everybody sells stuff?

Sure seems like all the stuff being sold should be in one convenient, easy to find place.

Hey Folks,

I believe I am a bit confused. There has been quite a bit of discussion lately in various threads about rules for makers and suppliers selling their wares. As a maker I go to the For Sale: Knifemaking Supplies & Tools forum primarily to buy knife making supplies. Would that still be the case when it all gets moved to the Exchange section? Or, will I start having to track down every dealer's own forum to find their goods? And, what about the occasional equipment sales by knife makers for knife makers?

I appreciate there being more potential buyers for folks selling knives. As long as I can still easily find knife maker supplies and equipment for sale, I'm good. If not, then leave it be. As for why else it might be good where it is (besides because we're just used to its being there)....

As craftsmen and artisans, I wonder if sometimes it might be kind of nice to keep separate our materials buying and selling activities from our knife selling activities. For instance, I'm not really sure I want to start competing with knife buying customers for my knife making supplies. Nor am I sure I would always want those knife buying customers to know everything about my supply and material buying. I'm just talking out of my hat here, but there you are.

All the best, Phil

can't it be mirrored in both locations?

it would still actually be the same number of forums, one for folders, one for fixed blades, one for gadgets and gear and one for supplies and tools... but it should be able to be set up so it shows up BOTH under Exchange AND under Makers.

i just don't know how to set that up in the vBulletin software, but i'm sure you could go to the vB forum and ask.

Spark, maybe I can help.
Folks - Look at it this way:

In the town of Bladeforums there are small flea markets in several places. You are constantly running into someone who has found a great deal, and say,"I wish I had seen that. Where was it?" or, "They have a flea market on Maker's street? I didn't know that."

Well, the town mayor ( Spark), decided to move all the flea markets into the Town Square ( Exchange). He even put up signs at the old locations with arrows pointing to the Town Square ( links).

Now if you want to look for something you need...you just go down to the Town Square.

Understand now?

I can't.

Yup.

I read Phil's thoughts on materials etc carefully, and I really don't think it's that big of a deal. What's gonna happen, the value of a knife is going to drop if a customer finds out you got a deal on the handle slabs? Maybe I'm just missing something. I seriously doubt too many buyers look through that stuff anyway. Not everyone gets all tingly surfing pics of bolts and chunks of wood y'know ;) Personally I have no problem telling a client or customer where I get my stuff; I try to get the very best and take pride in that.

Just my $.02. As I said before, I've been meaning to get a membership again but have waited because I was confused about the whole selling process. I think it's moving toward a much more orderly fashion now and that encourages me.

One question here.I don't care who answers it,if any of the makers know.

Would the "Hosted Knifemakers Forums" also be located in the exchange? I presume they do a lot of selling on their own forums also.

I don't mind if our forum is moved to the exchange,as long as it doesn't get so crowded in that Town Square that our little flea market can be easily overlooked.

The "Hosted Knifemakers Forums" will remain where they are, since selling is only one of their uses. It also makes sense to leave them between the General Knife Maker's Discussion and the Manufacturers Forums.

I've been very happy with Blade forms for over 8 years. But have often wondered why the 'Maker's For Sale' area wasn't in the exchange. Seems to me all stuff for sale should be in one place. But a lot of folks have gotten used to where the Maker's For Sale is???

I say move it.

OK, all you dissenters have shown me the error of my ways, and I'd like to change my vote. I'm in favor of putting all the "For Sale" items under a common area, "The Exchange." My only concern is that it will be more difficult than ever to snag up some of the awesome custom knives due to all the competition with so many more shoppers. :grumpy:

Well, I had not thought of that :o

You're just going to have to be quick

If, in the long run, it makes life easier for those looking to buy customs, then I say MOVE IT on over to the exchange.
