Got my MPK A2 back from Cliff about a week ago. It was in excellent shape.

The wear on the blade is barely noticeable and knife looks like it has not been used except for 3 dings. The blade finish seems to be tough. Two of the dings were barely noticeable. The larger one was closest to the handle is about 1/64". I did manage to roll the edge. It was much as you described. Cliff reports that it was possible he might have hit something embedded in the wood. I have done this often myself, and have seen sparks fly sometimes when I am using a khukuri.

When the coating is scratched there appears to be a gold colored layer beneath the black. The scratches in the coating are barely noticeable. I could not even find the wear that I put on the blade with the Lansky sharpener. The marks I put in exposed the gold color underneath. Perhaps oil and wear caused the black coating to migrate over the gold undercoating where it reattaches.

My ATAK2 edge chipped away when I hammered it into a block of particle board (K2)and twisted it out. I was eager to try this with the MPK and it did not show any damage. Also, the tip was not damaged by stabbing the “particle board” with the MPK, my ATAK2 tip was bent slightly (about 1 mm of it).

Will,

How in God's name does one find a Mission dealer? I swear they are the most infuriating knives to find. None of the big on line dealers have them. And the Mission website do not list dealers. Arrrgh!

This I can understand as chipping A2 tempered as Mission does should be very difficult. It is a nice knife, I think I'll look into the larger one when it comes out.

MD has commented that he leaves the tips somewhat soft but has not been that specific. There have been reports of bends and breaks in that regard, but at much greater levels of stress than what you describe.

I've not been able to find any official literature on the MPKS. How thick is the blade stock? And how hard is the blade made?

Tallwingedgoat,... heh heh.. that name kills me.....
Check your mail.
Also, take a look at : www.missionknives.com
Last time I was there I found out more than I ever wanted to know about the MPK.

That's my two cents. Hey! How come you're giving me change?

So I was thorough, so sue me!

Actually, I know where a few are right now, ready for immediate delivery, and could probably point you in the right direction of them. I just need to check with Mission first...

Hi Goat,

The blade is thickest along the spine (flat ground) at 0.25", and the largest edge to spine distance is 1.532". I thick the blade hardness is around 56 Rc.

This info is difficult to find on the Mission site since they have changed it around.

Thanks Will.

I read Cliff's review of the MPK. He observed the edge is a little too soft for chopping. I wonder if this is also true of Chris Reeve's Project I, being A2 at 55-57 RHC.

The edge geometry is weaker and the steel and compressability are the same. I see no reason why it would be expected to fare better and would actually bet it to be worse. Of course Reeve could so a better job at heat treating it, but Mission did discuss this with Busse who has used A2 for a long time.
