Subject: Mr. Andy Franco follows through and forwards my two ordered knives.
Reference: A recent previous thread on Andy Franco and non-receipt of ordered knives.
Summary: This new thread supplants my previous comments regarding Mr. Andy Franco and his Calico Forge Knife Company, Nampa, Idaho. This writing also serves as both a correction and retraction of my previous comments pertaining to Mr. Andy Franco, Calico Forge Knife Company. In sum, Mr. Franco recently forwarded two knives I ordered in February 2014. Additionally, Mr. Franco went an extra mile and provided an additional free knife. This free knife or Utility Neck Knife is a new entry in Calico Forge Knife Company's product line, re: The EA-3, or Ea3-K Knife. This third knife was forwarded free of charge and was part of an offered military/veteran's discount. I'm appreciative that Mr. Franco followed up and corrected any misunderstandings. We spoke via telephone and had a cordial discussion. I agreed to provide both a written retraction and correction (or removal) of my comments on this forum or other internet statements I made. I'm keeping my word.
The previous thread on this topic was initiated by another customer of the Calico Forge Knife Company. I provided my similar experience in his thread. I've been advised that Andy Franco has also completed that referenced individual's knife order. That customer is located overseas.
During my discussion with Mr. Franco, I did not delve into what the issues were pertaining to a communication problem. I focused on Mr. Franco's promise to deliver my ordered knives. I also conveyed my promise to correct and rectify any negative statements regarding his customer service or lack of follow-up action. In short, we have all experienced life events that are beyond our control and impact on our personal or business lives.
Brief Review of Calico Forge Knife Company Knives.
Preface. I'm not a knife expert and I do not have the expertise to provide a comprehensive review of any knife. However, as a consumer I can discern what is a quality knife. The latter point is representative of Andy Franco's excellent knives. Before me is a knife he terms his "F-5 Direct Combat Fighter (DCF)." This is a "...compact tactical edged weapon made for close quarter fighting scenarios. This knife will slice, thrust, and stab effectively while giving the operator maximum piercing capability. The F-5 DCF has a shortened tang frame that allows for faster draw and quick thrusting. The F-5 is also an effective service utility knife that holds a strong edge and stands up to heavy use." Source: Calico Forge Knife Company, Nampa, Idaho.
What I like about the F-5 DCF is the attention to detail, excellent weight to size ratio (the knife alone is approximately 5.5 ounces, with a blade of 4 1/4 inches (3/16″ thick 5160 carbon steel) and an overall total knife size with handle of 8 1/4 inches. The handle material is G-10 material in OD Green. The blade has a Mil-Spec Parkerized finish. There is also a Chisel wedge glass breaker and a lanyard hole with supplied cord. The total weight of knife and sheath is approximately 8.3 ounces (yes, I weighed the knife and sheath on a calibrated weight scale). There is file work or notching on top of the blade for a thumb grip. The sheath is an OD Green Kydex type sheath with "rigging." The sheath holds the knife firmly in place but it is easy to pull the knife out of the sheath (but not too easy that the knife will exit the sheath on its own volition. I observed no rattling of the blade in the sheath. Two nice touches of the referenced sheath, re: a tension adjustment screw near the entry area of the sheath-- and the sheath's Velcro fastening system. The two Velcro attachments permits you to attach the knife and sheath (the system) to a variety of equipment configurations. You can also attach "the system" to your belt in a horizontal carry position. The knife and sheath are held on your belt firmly and securely. In sum: excellent value that is accompanied by outstanding craftsmanship and attention to detail.
EDC-1. This is a smaller everyday carry knife also exhibiting outstanding attention to detail. This fixed blade knife may replace my EDC folder(s). It is a "go to" knife that you will not leave at home and all alone in your dresser drawer. The knife blade and sheath material are the same as the F-5 DCF discussed above. The blade length is approximately 2 5/8 inches long. There is file work or notching on top of the blade for a thumb grip. The overall length with the OD Green G-10 handle is approximately 6 inches total. The knife weighs approximately 2.6 ounces. Both the OD Green sheath and the knife weigh approximately 3.6 ounces (yes, I weighed the knife and sheath on a calibrated weight scale). The sheath also includes a tension adjustment screw. There is also a similar (but smaller) chisel wedge glass breaker at the end of the handle, and; a lanyard hole with supplied cord. The handle has finger grooves and fits nicely into my large hands. In sum: In my opinion, this is another Calico Forge knife that is a winner. I'm certain that this knife will become my daily EDC.
EA-3 or Ea3 K Knife. This was the free knife Mr. Franco provided to me as a discount for military personnel/veterans. Thank you Mr. Franco. This utility neck knife may or may not have replaced the EDC-1 knife discussed above. Or it may be another option in addition to the EDC-1 knife. You would have to contact Calico Knife Forge Company to determine availability of respective knives. This appears to be a new knife/utility blade introduced by Mr. Franco. This product is defined as a Utility Neck Knife and includes a strong neck chain. The blade is approximately 1 and 1/4 inches long with an overall length of 3 and 1/2 inches. The blade, in 0-1 Tool Steel, weights approximately 2.4 ounces. The blade, sheath, and neck chain weigh approximately 3.5 ounces. There is a cord cutter and lanyard hole. I like the way the blade and sheath hang in ready position from my neck. Check your respective jurisdiction for what may be deemed a double edged blade.
In conclusion, Andy Franco and Calico Forge Knife Company completed my order. Mr. Franco rectified any alleged communication problems. Mr. Franco's knives are an outstanding value for unique knives that exhibit attention to detail and demonstrated quality production. 'Nuff said! Peace, out.
