MSNBC knife article

Did it do any good? Who knows! There are some real slobbering trolls over there, and some nice people too - though there seems to be a reason why that forum is called "The Fray."

Not a place where I'd want to be a regular, but sometimes one must preach to people who are not already singing in the choir.

Here we go. When the media or public percieves somthing as a "threat" they begin panicky steps to regualte it.

It's a KNIFE. Geez.

James and Mike!

Fantastic job over in the Fray. I kept thinking what a miserable experience it was to keep reading some of the inane (but sometimes amusing) comments some of those Bozos made. Bill seemed somewhat lucid. I thought James Mattis (what is an xtian anyway?) did a magnificent job of trying to interject some Rational thought into that thread. I do believe you fellows have carried the sway over at the Fray. Hurray!

MickMan:

"Why would a rational person perceive self-defense as a threat? If such a person is not rational, why give them one inch on the debate ground?".

Its not the one inch on the debate ground that's the problem, it's the one vote at the ballot box.

I'm getting quite disillusioned with democracy, it's a fundamentally flawed system when you consider that there are more dumb people with a vote than smart ones.

I just poked my head back into that forum, where there are other switchblade threads besides Mike's.

One can easily ignore threads that are clearly a couple or three trolls under a bridge, disputing the hind end of a billygoat, and answer the serious posts.

So I had to respond to a guy who blamed knife laws on "liberals". Now I see that was proably a waste of time for him at least, since he also thinks that most convicts in prison are "liberals."

Paracelsus - "xtian" is an abbreviation for "Christian," as in "Xmas," that is used by some people of other persuasions, and also by one of the trolls under the bridge in The Fray forum. But that's another open can of worms, best left over there.

Hmmm . . . What's the best multitool for opening a can of worms? Aaacckk!!! Quick!! Take it to community!!

I was really saddened by the Slate artical, that is why I posted the link. Now that I have read the forum postings that Mike linked to I am really dishartened. Why are people so scared of a pocket knife of any type?

Did you all miss the humor in the article (unfortunately, it was unintended)?

“Most people want them for show, as curios or conversation pieces. They aren’t practical as tools,” he [Michele Beltrame] says. “So having a switchblade is a macho thing for a lot of people.”

Yet a few paragraphs up they say:

Among his recent new customers: the U.S. Coast Guard, which issues switchblades instead of fixed knives to water-rescue teams.

Does this mean that the US Coast Guard is issuing "curios" to their water-rescue teams, or that this team has found them to be the best tool for their jobs?

Those people at the Fray are freakin' NUTS!!!! Praise be to James Mattis and Mike for their forbearance

Unmoderated forums are nasty places to look for information in. Still, they sometimes do let you reach a few rational people that you might not have otherwise.

I really respect James and Mike for dealing with the trolls wandering around in the Fray.

Hmmmm, this reminds me that I really should put up a section on my homepage explaining my views on knives and guns. It won't reach that many people, but it should reach some who aren't in the choir. If anyone of you out there have personal home pages too, I suggest doing the same. It might not fit that well with the rest of the page, but it is a personal home page and should reflect you.

The problem with law makers is they think they have to make 1000 laws a year whether we need them or not. The problem with law enforcment personnel is you don't know whether they are good or corrupt you can only hope. The problem with people is you can't get them out to vote,in our state of California this March 07 was out of almost 30,000,000 people only about 2,300,000 showed up at the poles. This is why we get the laws we get and the government we have now.
