MT19P – Mule Team Fixed Blade featuring PSF27

I just bought one (plus scales and sheath from ebay) So I was wondering when is the expected shipping date?

I skipped this round. Is it just me or do others find this steel a little less "interesting" than the last few?

I talked with Gayle Bradley about this steel at last year's Blade Show. He is a big fan of the steel - he said that it works like D2, but comes with significant gains in both wear resistance and toughness. Overall, it sounds like it would be a fantastic mid-grade user steel that would fit in nicely when used in mid-range knives.

Plus, if Gayle is a big fan (the guy who brought us Spydies in M4), we know it has to be good, right?

What does it matter what the country of origin is? If they're doing things right and bringing us cool knives to play with at the lowest cost, then Taiwan or Japan or Mumbai will work.

I believe previous Mules were US-made until the S110V model which was not. People receiving the S110V model noted a different grind from previous models and this was acknowledged by Spyderco. So from one viewpoint it is hard to compare performance if the grinds are different. I have not heard anyone comment on the grind of MT19 yet so we don't know how it will compare with previous models.

Personally I feel better about the ones made in the US but Spyderco gets good quality from all of their different manufacturing facilities and some people seem to prefer models from some of the other facilities.

On the plus side, the Golden facility is very busy so there is some advantage to producing the Mules elsewhere in that it doesn't detract from Golden's production of other models.

Nah, my Cobalt Special is marked "SEKI-CITY JAPAN", and given that, I'd be surprised if the ZDP-189, Super Blue, and Damascus/VG-10 Mules weren't Japanese as well (but I don't own any of the others, so I can't check).

You have a good point there.

I just received my pair today and the finish is great. Just like the S110V. The holes do not have any burrs and are consistently drilled out. To respond to the gentleman (bodog) above about what does it matter where it comes from, well I can say that the Super Blue from Japan was so poorly finished it makes me question whether or not I want another one from the same manufacturer in Japan. I am very impressed with this and the 110 from Taiwan. Another impressively finished product from Taiwan for Spyderco.

Really like the grind on the 18. Wish all were this thin. The fit and finish on the 18 from Taiwan is impressive to say the least. Hope the 19 is the same.

Mine came in today. I see now what I've been missing out on. They look freaking awesome in person.

I ordered 2 of these. I have some scales from Halpern Ti which should also be coming today. The other I have I will be working up the courage to make some scales out of wood. Such a cool concept Spyderco has with the Mule team.

I'm having trouble finding info about the steel this Mule is made of. Is this considered a stainless steel or not? My fingerprints rust non-stainless steels like a mofo.

I've seen comparisons between PSF27 and D2. Having a similar chromium content at around 12% they are close to stainless but not quite. It will most likely develop a patina with regular use or maybe pit in harsher environments or with acids.
I'm reasonably sure someone will be testing this new Mule and give us an idea of its pros and cons.

Not worth making its own thread, recently finished handling and sheathing this MT19P. Only spent five or ten minutes with 1500 grit sandpaper and some strops, brought the edge up to hair-popping sharp. What a slicer.

The logos and lettering are still there but they're hard to see with the glare - it's easier to see in this other picture. The other side has more noticeable stamping.

I was surprised at how many of the PSF27 blades were still available. I guess it's not an interesting steel to most people?
