Hi all,

I recently decided to get my first fixed blade and was considering the Mtech Xtreme Tactical Knife w G10 Handle (MX-8079).

I couldn't find a single review online about this knife and was hoping that the kind people at BladeForums can help give some input about it?

Thanks so very much,
Vulpix

Mtech is one of the bottom of the barrel cheap knife brands.. Take it from someone who started out buying and breaking several mtech, elk ridge, frost cutlery, and other cheaply made knives, don't waste your money. There's a very good reason why those knives cost $20 or less typically(or $40 in this case) and others cost $75 or more. You get what you pay pay for. If that's the style you want, look into a kabar. For a good starter knife look at the kabar Becker line up, for $25 more you can get a bk16 or 17 and have a quality knife that'll last. Or look into Ontario as previously mentioned.

M tech is junk all day long! As Bobby said above, absolutely you can find so many better quality companies for just a little more in cost. You can find great prices on older Aus 8 Cold Steel models on many different sites now!

My input.....dont waste your money on it. $40 will get you into Ontario, Cold Steel, and Ka-bar territory. Much better steel from legit companies.

Yeah, don't bother with MTech, it's a junk brand, those things are not worth the money. If you want a fixed blade around that price range, get a Mora or Cold Steel. Look also into Ka-Bar, Buck, Kershaw, CRKT, etc. If you want a cheap folder, get any Opinel or one of the lower end Kershaws, or even the SanRenMu 7010 (or 710).
[edit: Yes, "junk brand" is a bit harsh, but I had a couple of MTechs and they all ended up breaking, had both folders and fixed blades, so I think it's not worth it. Another brand to stay away from is Boker's Magnum line, those things are pretty much the same as MTech. Boker Plus is entirely different and is pretty decent, mind you.]

Agreed with the above. For the $40 range you could have an Ontario 499, SP6, Marine Raider Bowie, SP1, etc... the Ontario line is fantastic in that price range.

I don't know anything about mTech, so a quick little research trip through the interwebz revealed all I need to know; they are owned by a sizeable wholesale company, importing and selling china made goods in large quantities... Not a bad thing in and of itself, but does make it a hit or miss product right off the bat... Not saying all cheap china made knives are automatically crap, some are actually surprisingly okay, but many, MANY more are junk, and for the price, and 440c (or a) claimed steel, neither one "bad" persay if manufactured and heat treated properly, if they were half decent products then it wouldn't be a secret and there would be some more supportive reviews about them.

That said, I wouldn't trust the product with my hard earned cash when there are comparable products available that are better proven... I must say though, I do like the blade design of the one you chose, (most of their stuff is impractical fantasy overly tacticool looking), but the handle looks uncomfortable...

You're obviously on a budget if you're considering mTech in the first place.
Here's a couple comparable (price/design) options under $50 that I would absolutely choose instead of mtech if I were you;

Glock fm78
Ontario sp6
Cold Steel Peacemaker II or Outdoorsman lite
KaBar Hunter or Bowie
Black Fox hunting knife
Case Lightweight Hunter Skinner

Some Other mass produced brands i would trust more then mTech;
Boker Magnum
Browning Black Label
Schrade (Extreme Survival)

Bladehq.com currently has a special running for about $40 you can get both the CRKT Free Range Folder AND Fixed blade knives... Great handle ergonics... Not as big as what you're looking at, but more practical size for sure!

What EVERYBODY else said! I can't even believe I'm going to say this, but I'd rather have a Schrade fixed blade.

For $50 you can snag a Becker BK15.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I would rather have a Gerber than an MTech...total waste of money.

I almost went there....

Then after careful consideration I realized, I'd rather have neither equally...
