MTech advice please?

post a budget, what you want it for and the style you want and im sure youll get some great suggestions that may be better. some of that chinese stuff is hit and miss i had one last well and one break in a day of a different brand and style.

That model is now around $25 for street price....but I still wouldn't buy one. It's the kind of thing you give your 10 year old nephew that you don't particularly care for, to put on a shelf. But not really to use. As others have said, look at Ka-Bar/Becker or Buck for a starter blade.

If you can still find a BK-15 for ~$50, that's one I like a lot.

However, I also have to say I have a few Master Cutlery (parent company) fixed blades made under several different brands and have been pretty happy with them considering they are generally dirt cheap.

I've used mine specifically to get practice doing mods and regrinds. Here is an MU-1130 I scored for $8 and reground on my Harbor Freight 1x30":

I love this pic, lol :D

I've no personal experience with the M-Tech fixed blades, so cannot comment on them.
For half the $50 price quoted above, you can get a Cold Steel "G.I. TANTO", which has a good reputation here in the forums. The Cold Steel KUDU or ELAND makes a good co-carry. For around $50 you could get all three.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the great input, but the thing is, perhaps its my weird country, but all the knives mentioned here are above the $100 price range, while the Mtech is $60. The only knife mentioned here I could find below the $100 price was the Boker Magnum, which is $80.

I was wondering what you guys thought about the Boker Magnum then? (Boker Magnum Midnight Bowie Knife 02MB209)

Or how about the Schrade Old Timer Trail Boss Knife (1140OT) or Schrade Frontier Extreme Survival Knife (SCHF36)?

Do a Google search for "Becker BK15" the second option has them listed for under $51...

Don't go by msrp, do some shopping around.

Schrade went out of business years ago and now the brand is slapped on subpar import junk. I wouldn't take an mtech for free.

If you fill in your profile information including location, it makes these threads much easier. Since Bladeforums is based in the US, most assume posters are from the US, unless they have a location indicating otherwise.

Thing is.. Knives aren't allowed to be shipped into Singapore so the only options I have are the local stores. And yes, I have noticed that the prices here in Singapore is pretty much double of what I can get on Amazon or Ebay.

So importation of any knife is not allowed at all, unless you are a business owner that sells said items? If that is the case, I had no idea.

Hmm, perhaps a local knife store can special-order a knife for you, Vulpix.

Many people are more accustomed to high(er) end stuff, and immediately write off lower end stuff.

Like referring to professional sports players and saying the backup players suck... Sure they suck "compared to" the starting players, let alone the star players, but they were still good enough to make it on the roster at all at the professional level (we've all been guilty of it to some degree)...

But that said I would trust a Boker Magnum over an mTech any day. At least Boker is an old and reputable (professional) brand name. mTech is minor leagues...

Same Steel grade (440a) but I would bet Boker, even on their lower end (Magnum) stuff, still has better internal quality control guidelines then a company like mTech..

even Schrade, owned by a parent company "Taylor Brands" (similar to mTech owned by "master Cutlery") is a more reputable name and a better bet IMO... Still hit or miss Chinese mass production stuff, but more then likely you'll get more hits and less misses by comparison of the two...

Thou allot more expensive it seems close to the same difference in price as we have here. The exchange rate isn't far off from a Google search, 1 dollar where you are being equivalent to .72 cents American.

The mtech being $25-35 here and $60 there. Then many of the knives recommended being around $65 or more here and $100 or more there. So unless you absolutely just can't afford it you're still better off buying the more expensive quality knife over the junk for a primary knife.
