So, learned about Fatwood and Firestraws here and finally got to try a little bit of both... Livin' in suburbia has it's limitations, so I could go over board, but made a weeee fire in the driveway the other night. Not too big, as my sheeple type neighbors would have called the National Guard...

Cut open the fire straw and had a few shaving, but layed out some fatwood on top.

About four hits off the Blastmatch and wallah! Even with a wet driveway too...

Burned for about 20-25 minutes with just that little bit of stuff!

Love learning stuff from you guys... Thanks much!

Fire is so cool!;):D
Looks like fun. I've been playing with alcohol burners, but I'm doing a primitive fire class in a couple weeks. Hopefully I have some cool stuff to share like your OP.

Thanks for sharing!

Looks like a successful venture Jeepnut. Did you find your fatwood, or did you buy it? Fatwood is one of the few things I've never tried. The only forests within about 50 miles of me are either in public parks, rich peoples' gardens or are managed, crop forests. If I went fatwood hunting I'd get arrested!

Purchased unfortunately...

Someday I will get my own though!

After learning what to look for here, I found some today for the first time. Is it just for kindling, or can you shave it for tinder?

You can shave it for tinder. I was lazy and let the fire straw get things started...

Did you make that firestraw or just bought it? Never used/seen one arround here. Seems like some kind of cotton stuffed plastick thingy!

Made it from some great suggestions from guys here. Basically take a McDonalds plastic straw and cut it in hald. Pinch one end with pliers and melt it shut.

Then stuff it with vaseline impregnated cotton balls. Then pinch the other end and melt it shut. Water tight! I just gut it open length wise and pulled a little of the cotton out to expose it. Spark it up and wallah! I'll try to take some process pics this week and post them...

You can also take out the Firestraw and just cut a short length off, and reseal the open end for additional fires IME.
