Comply, that is all you can do.
But one would think walking through central Park at night would cause a much hightened sense of awareness. One would continually "scan" the area, listen carefully and be thinking ahead. Was your friend complacent?
Has he walked through central Park many times before thinking of far more important things than his personal security? If he were 'keyed' into his surroundings, would he have heard THREE attackers moving in for the attack? Once they had the jump he had only one option: Compliance.
Before you flame my butt remember I am making presumptions and sidewalk quarterbacking. If I were to walk through central Park at night, I would be at such a hightened sense of awareness that any sound would cause me to have an adrenaline dump. seems like your friend has walked through the park too many times with nothing happening. He let his guard down, and that's when sh*t happens.
When you are staring down the business end of a firearm you can only hope you do not see the flash. Could a highly trained individual defended himself? Don't know.
Carrying a gun illegally in NYC? Can't answer that. In this case however the gun would have been of little use. But allow me to play Devil's advocate:
rewind to the night in question. Your buddy is walking through the park gun in hand scanning the area and in a very hightened sense of alert. He hears footsteps and can see an armed mugger............................................
