Mule Team #4 Steel

Will buy what ever comes next.

Looking forward to ZDP 189 & BG-42

The only knife I have in BG-42 is a LG Sebenza.
The blade on that one is amazing.
My stretch II is amazing as well. Have not had the heart to really use the ZDP Lums.

Thanks again Sal.

Yeah, me too. I'll enjoy it too, even if I already have knives in that steel already. Some of these steels are too exotic, IMO. If extreme production difficulties drive up the cost too high, it could kill the program. On the other hand, trying out different steels is one of the stated purposes of the program.

I love the exotics!

On the other hand in over 20 years of being aware of it, and collecting knives I've never seen a knife made of 440XH.

Sal, you're going to have to decide as usual. :) Joe

Agree on ZDP-189, if only because I'd like to have an identical knife to compare to the M4 version.

If my scale installation goes well on my S90V I will jump on the ZDP. As for other steels down the road, I would like to see an H-1, D2 ,BG-42, 154CM, or INFI (I can at least dream).

H1 currently cannot be flat ground, so that's probably out. BG-42 is hard to get in the quantities needed, and now it's getting pretty expensive. I'd prefer CPM154 over 154CM.

Oh yeah. INFI is exclusive to Jerry Busse, so that's probably out.

I know INFI is out, but I was just dreaming. I agree on the CPM 154CM though.

Hell, I'm dreaming about 10V and H1 myself. I suggested laser cutting the blanks, but hey, what do I know about knife production? Nada. :D

OK now I am really excited about a zdp 189 Mule. I wonder if it will be solid zdp 189 or ZDP core? I vote for solid although I don`t know why.

The PD#1 ( vascowear , cruware analog) looks good, as well as the A11 ( 10V analog), which has become a kind of standard for steels with maximum wear resistance, yet with still adequate strength and resistance to chipping at high RC's.

Thanks for the information, Phil, this is very interesting! Where would 10V fall in with these steels that you've listed?

db, sodak, My comparisons have all been with 154CM, S30v and S90V at 60 and 10V at 63/64. In the Spyderco case I have to assume they were at the hardness that Spyderco normally does their blades. That would be all they have to work with. 10V continues to amaze me. I have been working with a 10V blade ground to .008 at the edge cutting 1/2 rope and the thin edge is doing almost twice the cuts as another one I have at .015 edge. The combination of the carbides, edge geometry and hardness is all working together. Cliffs tests on cardboard are telling beacuse cardboard dulls the blade slower and it is easier to measure when one starts to dull against the other. I think 10V is equal to or better than S125V at the same hardness and edge thickness. Just my feel at this pt.I haven't compared the two directly with the same edge geometry.. PHil

they are referring to these numbers, which appeared earlier in the thread referred to above:
440C 360-400
VG10 500-510
S30V 550-580
S90V 750
ZDP 189 750
S125V 1200

I would really love BG-42 [VIM-VAR M-50 NIL] in a Mule.
That would be a really popular knife.

I have a BG-42 mili; it and my Lum ZDP are the only knives I own that see any real use! My two-personel favorite steels.... I vote for a BG-42 after the ZDP!!!! This is why I love Spyderco. The BG-42 is alot of people's grail knife steel. As long as the price point is under $100 each I will take three of each....I will be sitting by the phone waiting for Kristi's call!!!!

I know INFI is out, but I was just dreaming. I agree on the CPM 154CM though.

Sal has collaborated with others before. Busse might like to use this as an opportunity to broaden their fan base---it would certainly be an interesting conversation, don't you think?

What I would really like to see (as if anyone cares) is one of the non-steels, like Stellite 6K or Talonite. Rob Simonich was so enthusiastic about Talonite that I always wanted to give it a try.

Is anybody making Talonite knives anymore?

Something from Uddeholm would be nice, Elmax or a Vanadis, like 4 Extra or 6. And that 3% nitrogen alloy Jerker mentioned elsewhere.

People just keep naming steels, and I think "yes, make the Mule in that". I hope these mules continue to be in the product line for a while. All these steels sound great.
