Is there going to be any coming out before Xmas? I have 4 brother in laws and was going to give each a new folder for Xmas and did not want to over spend and miss out on the new mule. Does any one know if a new mule is scheduled to be released before the end of this year? Thanks Martin

I too would like to know if there might be a new Mule under the X-Mas tree.

I had heard that the CTS-XHP Mule is coming up next with some other stellar steels in the works. I'm VERY excited for their releases to say the least.

I was at SFO after Thanksgiving and the impression I got was that the XHP and 204P are pretty much ready to go. They were trying to decide which to release first. So I have high hopes we will see at least 1 of them before the fat man flys

I've been waiting for the CTS-204P for a while now. Looking forward to all the 2013 ones especially if they get around to something really exotic like K390.

Hope this isn't hijacking, but I thought the purpose of the Mules was to test and evaluate steels prior to using them in their production folders. However, I've heard of numerous people waiting for CTS-XHP and CTS-204P mules, which have already been used in sprint run Paramilitary 2's. Is this an extenuating circumstance since the steels were only used in sprint runs?

The Mules didn't used to interest me very much, but since I've learned more about blade steels, I definitely see myself getting one in the near future. They also seem like good opportunities for me to create a sheath and handle.

I think you are spot on correct. That's how I have always understood how the project started. I too have noticed that the Mule seems to come after the production blade in the same steel now. Not sure if it's just the way it worked out this year or not. Either way I am glad to get a fixed blade in cool steel that I can throw a nice wood handle on myself in my spare time. I love the mules. Keep them comming in whatever new steel you like. :)

The Mule Team project serves a number of purposes. One of those is to provide apples to apples comparisons in steels.

We work with many foundries that create many steels. They would like to see their steels get some attention. Steel junky's like the opportunity to learn about there new offerings. If we waited to offer each steel only in a Mule Team, the queue would be very long. We test all of the steels before we use them and some of them are chosen for production runs. But there are differences in models, blade shapes, grinds, geometries, etc. While they offer some experiencing of the steel, it's not apples to apples due to those differences.

Sal, thank you very much for the explanation. I hadn't really taken the time to consider things from the foundries' perspectives in terms of them wanting their steels to get attention. Now that you've mentioned it, it actually makes a lot of sense for them to want to see sprint runs and mules in their steels hit the market. I can think of a few steels that I've fallen in love with simply due to experiencing them in a Spyderco sprint run, and I can definitely see how that could drive demand for a steel. Experiencing CPM-M4 in my Manix 2 sprint directly lead to me purchasing a Gayle Bradley.

Just from your response and from reading a few threads on mules, I'll definitely be purchasing a few mules in the future. I was at the factory second sale a few weeks back and almost grabbed a few mule run seconds - now I'm really regretting that I didn't!

CTS-XHP. We've have a bunch ready, but there's a "whoops" in the blade grind. Just cosmetic. We're trying to decide if we should regrind and refinish, or lower the price some and offer them as is. Thoughts?

I'm biased, as I love the idea of deals on Spyderco items, but I'd wager that there would be plenty of people willing to jump on some discounted CTS-XHP mules if it's just a cosmetic issue. I'd love to hear others' opinions, though.

Lower the price and post them here. I've been looking for a reason to try a Spyderco and this may push me over the edge.
