Multi-climate survival with only one Busse

If you were going to be put in a wilderness situation and could only have one Busse knife, what would it be? Here's the trick: you don't know the wilderness type or climate in advance, so you have to pick something that would work well regardless of where you end up.

I am asking because I am going to engage in some outdoor activities with some nutty friends of mine who like to camp in the snowy mountains and the hot, dry desert. They are quite experienced and have invited me to join in.

One of the criteria is each person can only have one knife that is used for everything.

What would you pick?

Geeeezzzzzz, doesn't everyone by now know the BBSHSH is the best all around knife ever made???? Thats why I have so many!!!

Good question... Will you be hiking too? The SARsquatch might make a good choice as well, Good for batonning along the spine & the butt, long yet still capable of more delicate tasks. Comfortable in the hand and not too heavy riding on your hip.

My initial response was to just take a squatch. It has a solid grind, thinner stock, it's a mid sized blade, it can be stropped to maintain, and can basically do everything you may ever need (any of the mid sized buses can but some will excell at certain tasks better than others). However, I've also been contemplating putting an add out for an Uncle Mofo (or Mefo) with all it's satiny goodness. Thanks to Moloko plus and this thread I am now even closer. Your preferences and what else you are carrying in relation to your abilities/know how and your overall physical attributes are key here. I am no survivalist with inifinite knowledge and I'm not a very large/tall guy but I can manage. That being said weight is an issue but for an all around tool I'd be willing to tote a few more ounces. If I had an Uncle Mofo I'd convex it and I'd be willing to tote it on my pack.

I initially thought about the Mojo/Mofo line and even the SOW but wondered how easily I could maintain a recurved blade in the wild. I haven't had any experience with them and have generally avoided them simply out of my ignorance regarding how to properly care for them. Any suggestions?

Yes, hiking is included. The Squatch is definitely a favorite amongst a lot of people here, but how well would it compare to...

BBSHSH
SHSH2
ASH
SFNO
SJ
SJTAC
BATAC

...and all the other mid-size Busse knives that are out there?

Strop! Convex that edge and Strop it. Strop it often. You won't go blind! trust me. A trick I do is to just wrap some leather around my water bottle and go at it. That helps me hit the recurve fairly well. So far it has worked fine. Although if you don't have the time to practice or convex an edge I would just stick with what you know for now. Honestly the skinny ash, squatch, and other slim stock would probably be best. I'm just partial to the squatch because it is already convexed and well balanced for some light chopping and more detailed work.

I think - a BAN'd (or similarly uber-sharpened and reprofiled) .32 ASH with magnum G10

it'd be shaving sharp, tough as they come and big enough to do some chopping with, chunky enough to baton with - esp given its fatassed spine, plus it's throwable, and hefty enough to hammer with (or beat the shit out of something if need be). a true multipurpose tool, I think.

Personal preference would have a lot to do with this... To me a 'Squatch is more or less a SAR version of an SFNO... Similar dimensions. Compared to a BATAC, It'll chop better. If you were mainly hiking, I'd say take the BATAC, as to me it makes a great hiker's knife, the CG ASH will be heavier, but a Skinny ASH would be another great choice. To me the SJTAC fall into more of a fighter knife role, and doesn't chop as well (batonning aside) Although I have an SJ, I've never used it and I don't have any SHSH's at all for comparison. :o If you have the time, try taking the 3 best choices that fit you & the tasks you'll be doing and give them a "dry run" to see what works best for you.

Probably a GW. Light to carry, does small cutting tasks well, and is hella tough. Won't chop, but I've never seen real need for that in the wild, so shouldn't be a problem. Now, if we're not allowed to bring axes, then I might take something a little bigger.
