Multi-climate survival with only one Busse

If you can get your hands on an original Satin Jack I would think it would do about anything you need a knife to do.

I would choose my Puzzle Heart, only because I can but In my opinion, any flavor of Steel Heart is going to be the best bet.

Take your HOG knife, so we can identify your body later...:D

Seriously, with a thinned edge, the ASH-1 or HOG knife would be a great choice IMO.

If you were going to be put in a wilderness situation and could only have one Busse knife, what would it be? Here's the trick: you don't know the wilderness type or climate in advance, so you have to pick something that would work well regardless of where you end up.

I am asking because I am going to engage in some outdoor activities with some nutty friends of mine who like to camp in the snowy mountains and the hot, dry desert. They are quite experienced and have invited me to join in.

One of the criteria is each person can only have one knife that is used for everything.

What would you pick?

remember that a bigger blade can do small jobs but a small blade can't do big jobs. So GW is out for sure. I'd go with something like a Sarsquatch or bigger in size. Too big is not good either and an FFBM I would consider to big. Max size would be a CGFBM or SHBM. BM-E is a great size....

Well, of the ones I own, I have taken my SH-E from the mountains into the desert. Seems like a great all-rounder no matter where I am. Got to say, though, that I'm liking the NO-E as an all-rounder, too! :)

It is between the FSH and the squatch. I think I'd lean towards the squatch because the pommel is more functional and can be used as a hammer for driving tent stakes, etc... Damn hard to choose only one! In reality, I'd probably take 2 or 5.... ;):D

well, if i got dumped in the jungle, i sure would want to have a BIG knife!
because chopping through bamboo and the heavy vegetation is not possible with less then a machete!

dumped in the arctic climate (i live in the north of sweden and we have about a very cold fall/winter) i would like to have a BIG knife, cause splitting frozen wood suxx with even an axe under good conditions.

desert. well i hot during the day. freezing during the night. BIG KNIFE!

so, guess what my vote is.

NMFBM.

sure it is not the best knife for hunting and preper the food. but it will do the job.

bringing a smal knife would be next to suecide. because making a shelter for the night is something you want to do during the day, same as collecting food, firewood, and all of the supplies you ca get from mother nature.

and honestly, i big knife will do the job quicker and with less effort.

so i say it again NM FBM in kydex pants!

I would 1st check to see what the rest of your team is packing and then pick something they didnt have:thumbup:

then amongst ya. you'd have what ya need;)

if your going to have this rule make it at least work to your advantage:D

but a .25 SJ and SHSH would be top of my list

and then a sabre SFNO

lol! Good one!

Of the ones I own, my HHFSH, without a doubt. Covers all the bases really. Chopping wood, hacking a fishing hole in the ice, cutting fuzz sticks, digging, fighting off the alligator zombies, I could probably even make a rough spoon with one if I had to!

However, the 'multiclimate' bit makes me think of a rubber handled one, like the Basic-9. That way it can comfortably be used in sub-zero conditions without gloves if necessary.

That's the reason I like my Fallknivens (I don't have a Basic...)

Although I am new and only have one Busse. A recently purchased ASH-1. I can tell you
that I recently used it as an ice pick while high altitude hiking where it was the only gear
I had to assist with balance and footing. With it's thick spline you can hammer away for shelter building and cutting down a medium sized tree would not be a problem.

I backpack year round and have been caught in four day storms where much of the logs are soaked. Other knives have failed me in my attempts to split large enough logs to get to the dry wood for fire building. Not a problem with the ASH-1. If you ever need to throw this knife--start feeling sorry for whatever it lands on! The added weight no doubt would also make this a solid gutting knife.

The weight is a double edge sword. It does let you know it's there when hanging from the hip. Since I mostly backpack in Yosemite during the Summer months where major storms are not a problem and there is plenty of fallen wood and plenty of natural shelters this knife is overkill so I am keeping an eye out for a lighter Busse. The Badger
or the Tank have caught my eye. Lighter and with blades in the 5" range. I would love to have a local outfit where you can handle the different models but haven't found one. Good luck with your selection. Whatever it is I would also recommend carrying a small folder for the small stuff around the campsite. Just don't tell your equipment regulating partners!

I find that a knife like an AD, old MS, SAR-5, or BAIII is all I ever need unless you go out with guys that are looking for reasons to use a bigger knife. And the thing not to leave home is a Leatherman wave. Where I go is also high mountains and unless you drag something along with you there isn't much to chop above tree-line :p

Also these days unless you are looking to mimic a survival situation you are not going to make a fire but just use a fuel stove, not make shelter but use a tent, not clean game but open packaged foods, etc etc. And the most important thing about a good trip out is to be able to move fast and not be loaded down with stuff you don’t need.

And as I write this I think of my buddy that could be dropped off in wilderness anywhere in the world with a 30-40 lb pack and come back home healthy…. all he ever has with him is a simple SAK.

So knife guys like us are going to rationalize all kinds of stuff from a small folder to a FBM. So my knife guy rationalization would be a SAR-5 or a full size SAR. Remember that those two knives came from recommendations of guys that actually do go out and do it all. I'd still have a hard time leaving that Leatherman home though

Me too... mostly from off of 120 to Togia Pass or on the East Side.

If you are ever near San Francisco and want to see a Busse let me know I have most of them but no Tankers.

.

Tony,

Cool. It is always good to meet other packers. I also do most of my packing off of Tioga Rd in the high country. Cooler and less people. Please let me
know how to reach you. I would very much like to see other Busse models.

Thanks,

I'd definately choose an Ash or Skinny ASH! Medium sized, but just enough heft to do any job.
