Multi-tool best for self defence?

I carry a Para-military and/or a military Spyderco but I am thinking that a good multi tool might be better. I have read in a Knife mag. that a good defense lawyer can make the guy defending himself look bad if his knife has a threatening name.
I am thinking a good multi tool would look better.
I want a multi tool that has a 3-4 inch blade that is easy to get out. Large and a bit heave would be a plus. Any suggestions?

they have swiss army knives that have locking blades tht can be opened with one hand.

Any blade on a multitool will be closer to 3" than 4" and most of them are slipjoints with nail nicks - not ideal for self-defense.
Your best bet (besides using the multitool as an impact weapon, which is what Tactical Knives magazine was suggesting) is a locking blade with a hole or a thumbstud, accessible when the multitool is closed. Look at the new Leatherman Wave, or the SOG powerassist series - the latter is the only multitool I know of with an assisted opening blade.

Leatherman Wave, or the SOG powerassist series sounds like a good place to start a little research. I recall

The Leatherman Wave is good because you can open a locking blade one handed without having to open the tool.

You could probably do a lot of damage with a Leatherman Wave just by throwing it at their head.

Pardon my language, by that is BS! as an attorney, I can tell you that that crap comes after everything else. Self defense has elements, worry about meeting them in your jurisdiction. If you are that worried about it, don't carry a knife for self defense.

any of the one handed blade leathermans if your going for quick blade deployment but if your looking for a more Kabuton like feel for SD id go for one of the gerber OTF sliding multis

Cheers!

the Colonel

+1, I'm not an attorney, but if it comes to using a knife or other weapon for self defense, it means that your life was in immediate danger of ending. At this point, you'll wish you not only had a knife, but a gun as well. With any SD situation, you will have explaining to do, but in the end, you will be there to do the explaining which sure beats a chalk outline presenting your side of the story.

(1.) I have carried a knife since I was 8 years old and will until I die. (I am now 65):)

(2.)
I would like to carry something that doesn’t raise eyebrows as I shop the local stores.

I am one of those people who actually like the “what is the best knife if…” story lines we have here at BladeForums.com. I just thought the Chinese speaking zombies would be objected to and my sneaking in the what- “Multi-tool best for self defense?” would fly. hehe…:D

I want to thank 3mptin3ss for his excellent suggestion of “Swiss army knives” because I would not have thought of them. stormyone for the Leatherman Wave, chanwahyaoh for the Skeletool, and ColonelX for the Gerber OTF.

Special thanks to mongomondo and tjsulli790 for there creative/weird suggestions. :D:eek:

Smash05 aka “Pardon my language attorney..." :thumbdn:I do not like attorneys. :thumbdn: There is NO doubt that the US would be better if we had ~ 90% less.

I do take offense at your lame “advice””… If you are that worried about it, don't carry a knife for self defense
I have carried a knife for most of my 65 years with no problems even though I have used a knife in a number of self defense situations. I even have a nice .357 S&W in my collection that an idiot showed me under his jacket while still holstered.
Further more, don’t wish me your fake “good luck” as I don’t believe in luck.

45stops-em-quick you are once again off topic. I didn’t ask on BladeForums.com. about fire arms.

If the information posted can not be addressed without insults. The insults do not belong in this forum. (very strong hint)

Glad I could help, nice to see you can take some advice. You stated you read something in a magazine, the information you got was bad. I tried to point that out to you, as both a knife enthusiast and a barred attorney. You decided to take my advice with derision and insult. Good luck.

i think you should just carry what you want but if you are set on using a multitool the Leatherman skeletool is definatley the way to go.

Its sleek and sexy with a 154cm blade that could do some real damage. it could easily be opened one handed and the lock is nice and secure.

http://leatherman.com/multi-tools/full-size-tools/skeletool-cx.aspx tell me its not the prettiest multi-tool in the market, safe and sheeple friendly its more likely to bring oohs and ahhs than worried looks.

Maybe a leatherman surge? it's the largest leatherman multi tool still has a large 1 hand opening blade.

You are aware that a knife is a poor defense tool right? Any weapon is about increasing the amount of either force you can exert or distance between you and your enemy. A knife doesn't do either really well. I mean it's better than bare hands but I'd recommend you purchase a quality firearm for carry and then seek training in how to use it. In MANY cases a bad guy is going to have a gun. And in such a case... knife loses nearly every time. In a situation where the bad guy has a knife, stick, or empty hand... chances are you will not see the attack coming anyway as these people are usually cowards and wait until you have your hands full or your back turned. That being said... a multi-tool I think would make a poor choice for defense even over a knife as their locking mechanisms are not usually as robust as a folding knife that could be used for defense... but understand that even the most robust lock can fail under the stress of a fight. If I were stuck with only a knife for defense... and it HAD to be a folder of some type... I'd carry a Balisong. They are intemidating and their locking mechanism is IMHO the strongest lock type of any "Two Piece" knife... as I wouldn't really call a balisong a folder. I can see a multi-tool making for an adequate impact weapon... nothing more.

I hate to give Lynn Thompson any percs but the 'Sharky' pen makes an excellent Kubotan for self defense. Big Sharpies, in general, serve the same purpose. Of course a 6" Mini-Maglite works well too and usually doesn't raise too many eyebrows. It's all about concentrating force at a crucial point.

You could always pinch the attackers nipples with the pliers, that'd turn him away pretty quickly .

What is this? Aside from a Rescue Tool. I've never seen it before, so I'm assuming that it's relatively new? Does it come with a PE blade? How much and where can I get one? I want it, bad.
