Multi-tool best for self defence?

If you are using a multi tool I would suggest hitting with the needlenosed pliers end. In my tests on 2x4's icepick holding and stabbing motions with the end are more destructive and hold grip retention better than holding the knife and stabbing/slashing. Plus the tips are more robust, less likely to break and on occasion open slightly just before impact and close upon impact- tearing at the target. Opening one like a butterfly knife has its advantages too. The motions for opening a b-fly knife are well known and the motion alone may deter an assailant- try it in front of an unsuspecting training partner and see their expression/ shock. As well I feel (and may be alone in this) that opening a pair of pliers may be harder to prove criminal intent if anything goes down. A strike to any area of the face/neck will be felt, and is less than likely to be fatal.

It is your decision what to do here and do what you will of your own volition, but this is my recomendation based on practice (p.s. leatherman supertool has flipped the best for me- before it broke and they sent me an inferior model).

I would also recommend the Leatherman Surge. I got one just a little while back and it is a real heavy weight.

If you would tie a piece of paracord to this thing, you could whirl it around your head in a large circle like some medieval weapon until you hit your attacker. I have no doubt you would disable him, maybe permanently.

It is a brick of solid stainless, so unwanted bits of this and that from the demise of your attacker could easily be cleaned off.

On a more serious note, this piece of equipment is sturdy, and best of all it is an honest handful of tool. It doesn't slip in your hands and there is plenty of tool to hang onto. It has two full sized blades liner locking blades that open easily with one hand. One blade is fully serrated, and the other is a nicely shaped plain edge.

For some reason, a lot of retailers seem to be dumping these at about $40, so it is a helluva deal, even if you just keep it in the truck.

I had the surge and I can see why it's not extremely popular; it's a dense 12.5 oz chunk of steel. I carried it in its leather sheath for a couple of days, and I didn't think the additional 50% weight for an extra 20% blade length is a good trade off. I'm sure it's great for people whose lines of work depend on robust implements, but a desk jockey EDC it is not.

I agree with phaserrifle... I own the Vic SwissTool and use it everyday at work. Read the link and I think you will be swayed; it is an excellent tool and will serve you well in all that you do.

I would prefer to use my Leatherman Wave as a fistload rather than a defensive knife. Maybe with the screwdriver tip out in a icepick hold...

gee! i thought the meek lookin' minute swisstech key was an ideal hide-a-way, it unfortunately, has since been long discontinued.
and it's a pretty good deal havin' any one of those new hole-in-blade saks and this includes the Wenger Ranger range as well.

I'd recommend one of these for self defense

** INSERT MENTAL PIC OF THE RESCUE TOOL HERE **

What is this? Aside from a Rescue Tool. I've never seen it before, so I'm assuming that it's relatively new? Does it come with a PE blade? How much and where can I get one? I want it, bad.

I haven't seen that one before myself. I found it here for $49 : http://tinyurl.com/d8mfkw

If the link didn't work, I found it on Amazon. Not shopping for one but nosing around that was the first place I looked. I didn't know what that little pointed key was for, but I do now!

Check out this kick ass video! If you were a rescue guy, how could you carry anything else? If the link doesn't work, it is on the Amazon page about half way down. You will alternately laugh your butt off and be equally amazed!

I have never seen anyone saw glass with any kind of knife - ever! I don't care if it is safety glass. Pretty remarkable.

I like it when at the end of the demo they show you it is just as practical for relaxation as it is for rescue. I don't know if it comes with the cool holster or not. I really liked the little love pats on Old Betsy at the end of a day of smashing and cutting windshields.

Steel-Junky, I know something about guns. I didn’t just fall off the turnip wagon. I would bet I could even tell you a thing or two about guns.
You should know that this is BladeForums.com.- General Knife Discussion. Look at the top of this page.
I am tired of being told that there now be “thunder sticks”.

Bastid , I agree with you. I did overreact. I tend to do that with rattlesnakes and attorneys. I have edited my ordinal feelings into reasonable words of mild distain. Thank you for your strong hint.

mhawg, thanks. I have the new SureFire Pen and like that a lot.
