Multi tool collectors ?

libbyhuck, I'll second that opinion about the BearJaws tool. It certainly is a top-notch piece of equipment. As a matter of fact, ALL of the Bear Cutlery multitools are top-notch, and they don't get nearly the appreciation they deserve.

(and don't call me CRAZY just because I have both the current version with the locking blades AND the original with non-locking blades in my collection. And the big Super Bear Jaws tool. And of course the little Mini Bear Jaws tool. Oh, and I also have the Bear tool with shears instead of plier jaws..........um, both the bird hunter version AND the gardener version............okay, maybe I'm just a LITTLE crazy.)
:)

I think only lonediver and JOOLIESEWS are nuts. ;)
But I sure appreciate their experience with all these tools :)

Man, you guys are a bad influence...I thought I was crazy to have 5-6 different makes of multi-tools and here you guys have about 2,000 lbs. of metal sitting around...has anyone tried the BEARJAWS SPORTSMAN?..I have carried one almost everyday for a year or two and sure favor it...great tool for the price. I'm staying in the Schrade and Buck Forums...you guys are too far gone.....and my knife hobby cannot support another "mistress".

Aaaww , if you did not enjoy them you would not be here particapating . As far as having 2,000 lbs of metal ....... At present I have my collection is divided between 10 cases and I just weighed one of the heavier ones ( the multi tool hammers ) it weighed in at 32 lbs . So at worst case 32 x 10 = 320 lbs . Now 2,000 lbs is an ambition to work toward . Ask me how much it weighs some years from now .

I agree with Bob ( jooliesews ) Bearjaws is a good multi . A footnote in multitool development is that Victorinox bought Bear cutlery which gave them access to the Bearjaws patents for the development of the Swisstools . Bearjaws is also I seem to recall in something I read virtually one of the only to fight and win a suit against Leatherman , something on patent infringment .

We are not nuts , we are just inquisitive . As Bob said somewhere else , how will we know which is the better of them until we examine them all firsthand . We met through ebay where we found that we were competing , bidding for a lot of the same type of items . Now we watch out for each other helping find items that the other may have missed in searches there .

Anyone else out there who aspires to collect multitools had best get busy . Some of the earlier makers Buck , Kutmaster , Schrade are no longer in the buisness of making them . If any of you here are curious . Joe , Bob and I can attempt to make lists of models made by the various manufaturers . Bob sent me a list a little while ago og Sog models that was pretty complete . I could only find one that he missed . I put together a list of Bucktools and Joe spotted a few variations that I missed . Anyone here like to see or participate in such a project ?

I would love to see a chronology of any type from the varied manufacturers. :)

SOG SwitchPlier SWPL76

The only one that I could find that Bob missed was a limited production run that SOG did of the SOG paratool that was done with turquiose inlay by David Yellowhorse .

BTW , if anyone knows where one of these can be seen please let me know . Bob tells me that he passed one up some years ago . I told him that he deserves a kick in the patootie for having missed out on an opportunity . :p

If any of you can make suggestions or add to the lists I for one will be glad to hear it .

More lists to follow . :)

:eek: Thank you, Lonediver . :) I had no idea SOG had created so many variations. Turquiose inlay. If I can locate a photo of that one I'll post a link.
Thanks again.

Here is a list that I have on Bucktools , At the time that I originally posted it on this forum Joebw pointed out that I was missing two which I have now added below and have aquired them to my collection as well .

Two Minibuck Tools model 350 ( Stainless and black anodized finish ) otherwise identical in all features except I percieve a difference in the construction of thier tweezers ( finer point , maybe to be addressed another time )

Features ;

Pliers with no wire cutter
clip point knife blade
fingernail tool
eyeglass screwdriver
scissors
tweezers
awl
lanyard ring

none of the tools lock

I have 7 Bucktools model 360 which is thier original , variations here are

The original stainless finish

stainless with belt clip

black anodized finish

camo paint finish

The above four have all the same tools - features , which are as follows ;

pliers with wire cutter
partially serrated clip point blade
3 flat point screwdrivers blades graduated sizes
sheeps foot serrated blade
bottle - can opener blade
2 philips screwdiver blades different sizes ( has that weird 3 point intead of regular 4 point philips )

All tools lock

There are two models of the 360 that they called the Workman , they substituted the bottle - can opener and replaced it with an awl . They also removed the partially serrated clip point blade and put in a chisel point file , coarse and fine on opposite sides . The bottom of this blade has a graduated scale of 5 wire strippers . Another variation of this has only one wire stripper notch .

On one more Bucktool 360 they removed one of the three point philips screwdrivers and replaced it with a lanyard attachment .

The Bucktools all had icons stamped into the sides of the handles of what tools were in that handle . The above one with the lanyard attachment does not have an icon recognizing the change made for this variation .It retains the icons for two philips drivers but only in fact has one .

The Bucktool is unique in that I believe that it was the first to offer a push button type release lock of thier tools . I will be glad to be corrected if I am wrong .

Last there is the Bucklite model 355

features ;

pliers with wire cutter
partially serrated clip point blade
3 flat point screwdriver blades
file blade ( fine and coarse )
awl
1 - 3 point philips screwdriver blade
lanyard ring attachment blade

none of the tools lock

Something that there was a lot of promo work done on around 2002 but was never officially released was the Buck Navigator which you will find discussed elsewhere in this forum .

If anyone can add anything to this again I will be glad to hear it . :)

Made a single model of a multi tool the ACX 100 which featured ;

A non folding needle nose , vice grip type plier head with wire cutter . The tension on the plier head could be adjusted from the base of one of the handles . The second handle has a tension release for the plier head when this portion of the tool is used .

A parially serrated knife blade with a liner lock that could be opened from the outside of the handle with the use of a thumb stud .

A file blade

A hacksaw blade

A philips screwdriver

A standard flat screwdriver

A can/bottle opener blade

Metric and standard ruler on outside of handle

This I seem to remember beat the Leatherman crunch to the marketplace . I will do a little more homework and try to produce a timeframe on when some of these tools came out .

This was also produced for Craftsman ( Sears ) with a craftsman label .

They later introduced an adapter for the ACX 100 that was deigned to be clamped in several different positions in the plier jaws . The end of the adapter would accomadate any standard 1/4 inch hex bit .

I do enjoy them and thought I was a half a bubble off level for my interest in multi-tools. Now that I see there are other enthusiasts more avid than me, it kind of validates my desire to see, touch, handle, test, pack and possibly purchase more multi-tools. The mrs has her patience tested w/my pursue however. She did buy me a Gerber multi for Christmas and any time we are in a store w/sporting goods, she makes a time-allowance for me to appraise the cutlery section. I want to dig deeper into the multi-tool arena of my "Its just a knife/pliars thingy" [the mrs. words] passion and am wondering how you guys maintain domestic bliss? Thats why I refer to my hobby as my "mistress".

libbyhuck , Have you ever heard the saying " That ignorance is bliss "

Well her ignorance ( of how many I have ) is my bliss . Everyone in my family is aware that I collect these but I rarely speak to them about how extensive it is . Advice from here is speak the truth , just not the WHOLE truth . :)

Glad to see that you are an enthusiast , if you have only looked at plier based look further into wrench , hammer , scissor/shear based multitools .

Shame on you sputnik (kidding ) and yes klatman now you can call me nuts . I have now aquired the David Yellowhorse SOG paratool . It is not the most expensive one that I have gotten but it is in the top 10 or so . I will post pictures of this piece at a later date .

Thank you many times over for the lead sputnik , I have been wanting one of those a long time . It turns out that it is in Arizona where I live though it is a 100 miles from me . I made arrangements that I will pick it up at the store in a week or so . Once I have it in my hands I will get some better pics to show its better side .

BTW , I saw David visiting here this afternoon .
