Multi-tool thoughts?

The Leatherman Wave should rank high -- it's a great tool!
I got mine for $15 off the regular price at Target about a year ago. It was selling for about $70 normally, I believe. I had handled but never owned some of the "regular" models and noted that they were not palm-friendly when gripping the pliers. Also, the redesign of the Wave enables four different tools to be opened with the tool closed. The bowie-style plain edge and the sheepsfoot serrated edge are one-hand-opening! That's great! Since I don't know of any other multi-tool offering the combination of features, I think the Leatherman Wave is the best one around.

Over the last 15 years or so, I've carried a multi-tool as work EDC. I started with a Leatherman, went to Gerber and Schrade, and back to Leatherman. My current Wave is the finest, by far, of all. I like it's portability, utility, everything. If I were to get one for the truck or toolbox, I'd probably get the SwissTool or the SOG, just to have something different. Salude.

I have two basic gripes with the Wave. First, I find the inner tools hard to open in the best of circumstances. When working outdoors, in wet, dirty or muddy conditions, the tools become impossible to open. Second, there's no awl. Gotta have an awl!

The Swiss Tool is excellent. It has some tools that its competitors do not have (for example, that chisel thingie, which is surprisingly useful). However, I find the Swiss Tool to be a little too heavy and bulky for away - from - the - house carry. I'd love to see a slightly scaled down version of the Swiss Tool.

One of my favorites is the Leatherman Crunch. It has fewer tools, but those locking pliers are great.

Most often, however, I carry one of the Leatherman Juice tools. I work in an office environment, and the Juice tools blend in perfectly. Plus, they're so small and light that you'll be more likely to have one with you when you really need it.

If I really want to cover all the possibilities, I carry both the Crunch and a Juice tool or SAK.
