I've hard my fair share of multi-tools and I ALWAYS have one with me, I'm the go to guy. My favorites have always been Leatherman and SOG (I have yet to handle a victorinox multi-tool).
I have had one of the original leathermans for about 14-15 years now and it still looks brand new. Operates well, is light-weight and still fits in my old boy scout pouch that was designed around the leathermans and maglites at the time.
That is what go tme hooked on Leathermans. Now I have a more modern version, the leatherman Surge. It's a beast and has just about everything but the kitchen sink in it. Great multi-tool but I have yet to put it to the test.
My SOG Powerlock is the military version and has the black coating, which I have to say is a very nice coating because it is still there after 2-3 years of constant use (I say military version due to the box and dealer that I bought it from). This multi-tool has a lot to offer. It opens up just like a balisong and is very comfortable when applying a lot of pressure on the pliers. The only complaint about this is the saw. The saw can't cut a twig to save your life. I don't know if my SAK OHT has me spoiled with their saw design, but I know a saw should cut something in a reasonable amount of time.
Gerbers are "ok" in my book. I often used one when I was doing maintenance work two summers ago so I wouldn't damage my good tools. The jaws are a big complaint of mine, they don't open wide enough to get a good bite. They are very light and don't take up much belt room, but you get what you pay for. Gerber probably has my least favorite multi-tools. Oh almost forgot, the scissors on gerbers are really superb, probably the best feature on them, okay, I'm done now
