Hello,

Maybe newbie question. If i want to heat treat 2-3 knives, how many times can i quench it in the same oil before it's no longer good for another quench? does it depend on the temperature?

Thanks,

I've used the same oil for years with no problems.

Thanks for reply.

what i meant was during the same quench session? not the long term life of the oil. whats the max temperature for the oil to not be good for quench.

Thanks.

No issues... I've done 7 large knives in 30 minutes.

It cools a bit between quenches, so it isn't a big problem unless you are doing many large knives. As long as it doesn't rise more than 10 ° it is fine.

If it gets too warm, grab a frozen one liter water bottle in your tongs and check the temp as you swirl the bottle around in the oil. It will drop fast.

the more oil you have the better off you will be :) quenching into small volume will heat up your oil quicker and also might slow down your quench + increase danger of oil catching on fire. How much oil do you currently quench into?

Ideally your oil will have a spec sheet with min/max temperatures. For Parks 50, the max temp is 120°F.

Overheated oil is a serious concern. If I was using an oil without a spec sheet, I would stay below 150°F.

I have 5 gallons of Parks50 in my tank.
