Maybe newbie question. If i want to heat treat 2-3 knives, how many times can i quench it in the same oil before it's no longer good for another quench? does it depend on the temperature?
It cools a bit between quenches, so it isn't a big problem unless you are doing many large knives. As long as it doesn't rise more than 10 ° it is fine.
If it gets too warm, grab a frozen one liter water bottle in your tongs and check the temp as you swirl the bottle around in the oil. It will drop fast.
the more oil you have the better off you will be quenching into small volume will heat up your oil quicker and also might slow down your quench + increase danger of oil catching on fire. How much oil do you currently quench into?
