Multiple Personalities

When it comes to the whole survival thing, I think I might have a personality disorder.

Every year for the last few years, 5 at least, with the change of the seasons, my whole outlook changes. Come fall and winter my focus goes to personal preparedness and away from the outdoor activities that I so enjoy during the spring and summer.

Now, I realize that this most likely sounds fairly normal to most of you, but for me, it's kind of extreme. I go from liking leather to prefering Kydex. I go from natural handle materials to wanting G-10 and micarta. My hiking boots go into the closet and my tactical boots come out.

And the weird part is that it happens so quick. I've changed out all my gear in the past week. My intrests just shift overnight. The thing that bothers me is that at this switchover, I always regret some of my gear purchases. They just don't fit in with the new POV.

I'm a firm believer in the Zombie theory of personal preparedness. That if your ready for the end of the world brought on by a zombie outbreak, your ready for just about anything. Not to mention that it's almost inevitable that the dead will eventually rise. It also brings a bit of lightheartedness to a rather gloomy subject and makes it almost fun. And I love the movies.

Anybody else do this back and forth?

I edc a SMF Strider. If I'm bored I play with it. Does that count?

I get like that too, but my changes go by every month or so. Once in a while I'll be in favor of wood handles and slippies, and then I lean towards the tacticle side, and the cycle goes on and on.

all too much, I can never settle on one thing i like. but it keeps it fun.

You know, maybe it is mass hysteria cause I've been all of a sudden gravitating to mircata when a couple of months ago I was solidly in the wood camp....

I guess i got old somewhere along the line. I still like to hike and camp and hunt but I just don't buy new gear anymore. My rifles still shoot straight and there haven't been any ground shattering improvements in firearms in 25 years. My back pack gets replaced when it falls apart as do my boots and clothes. Knives however still fascinate me but I'd rather be cut by a knife I know than by a stranger so I don't buy many of those either :)

I am like that too except I switch back and forth from being a minimalist to liking to have every possible piece of gear with me. Lately, I have been more on the minimalist side though.

I don't think there is anything wrong with switching, it just gives us multiple perspectives.

i feel the same way. in the summer time, it's easy to concentrate on minimalist because the weather is nice. then we pass the autumnal equinox, the days get shorter and colder and all the sudden your focus changes because you realize your minimalist set-up wouldn't keep you alive through the winter.

one thing we have to remember is that from the beginning of history until about 100 years ago, the entire spring, summer, and fall were spent ensuring that there was enough food and fuel to stay warm and fed through the winter.

That's a very good way to put it

That is a good thing to remember about prep for winter.

I get seasonal affective disorder because we only get 5 or 6 hours of daylight in the winter months.

Recently i have been getting into the old mountainman style bush gear but I dont know if it has anything to do with the seasons.

I to subscribe to the zombie method of survivalism. Not only does it make a scary subject a lot more fun for some reason sheeple find it a lot less threatening than preparing for a
disaster that is a lot more possible. Tell them you are preparing for a possible earthquake ,stock market collapse etc and they think you are some kind of nut but tell them all the guns and knives are for the inevitable zombie apocalypse and they say "cool".

I'm kind of the same way. I keep looking at things like Kifaru packs, but love my Duluth packs. Now, if Kifaru only made theirs in canvas and leather. . .I could live in both worlds at the same time. :D

That's because it is cool. And because deep, deep.....deep down, they all know that it's just a matter of time.

It's preprogrammed into our minds, like the fear of spiders and snakes and tax collectors. We all know that the dead will rise.

I don't know about the dead rising up again, unless you guys are kidding and I just didn't get it, but my education in the scientific ways of the human body you might be onto something that I have theorized about for quite a while. It's the cell. It's in our DNA. It's the very basis for our survival, preparation and tool selection and stores for the coming winter. Winter meant death, it's still with us in our primeval being.Just like ethnicity and food.Sights and sounds can make you wonder and know that "I have been here before" or I have seen this before, but you haven't, but there could be a microtic part of your DNA/RNA that has a long time ago.

I don't have a personality disorder..

Voice 1, "Yes, you do.."

Voice 2, "No, I don't.."

I "switch gears" based on the season. BOB gets warmer gear. Extra fire making supplies. For the most part, my gears choices are fairly constant. I prefer Kydex over leather. We all know how leather retains water. I don't like slippies (except for my Vics) and I prefer G10/micarta with a good grip over smooth metal or wood.

I am by nature a minimialist and cheap arse. Coincidence? I'm pretty good about not over indulging this hobby.

Well if anything; admitting you have a problem is a step in the right direction!;)

The only difference between us is that my preffernces change monthly and not seasonaly:o

For instance I stooped using a backpack as my daypack and got a shoulder bag which I love, but now I am looking into backpacks again.

I am fan of knives in the 4" range, but the last few knives I puchased are between 6" and 12".

Hell atleast if we keep buying new products we are helping the ecconomy.
