I'm in the planning stages of making a 2x27 grinder patterned after Michael Morris' and am wondering about a few things.

1. What is a recommended safe belt speed range ?

2. What single RPM motor should I get? 1725, 1800 or 3450? Non-variable at this moment.

3. What grit belt would be the highest you would use to shape and bevel the blank?

In Morris' Youtube videos, it looks like he's using, and I'm guessing here, an 1800 rpm grinder with a 16" or 18" wooden contact wheel and an

8" or 10" drive wheel. He also used a single grit belt to do the majority of the material removal and shaping.

I like the looks of his grinder because its simple and straightforward. I can build a more complicated one at a later date.

SCARY!!! Haven't watched Sam's stone wheel explode, I wouldn't consider plywood. Most makers use 8-10" contact wheels. I've got some WIPs on here on how to convert an 8" caster from Menards into an 8" contact wheel for around $30. It's MUCH SAFER than a high speed plywood grenade.

Still, to each his own. . .
